Seven people are reportedly injured after an explosion destroyed a church in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin earlier today.

OCONOMOWOC, Wis. - An explosion in a Milwaukee suburb demolished a church and damaged two homes Wednesday, injuring seven people, including three firefighters, authorities said.

Road and sewer work was being done in downtown Oconomowoc before the explosion occurred around 1:30 p.m., said Bob Duffy, the city's economic development director. The blast and flying debris knocked over several workers, he said.

WE Energies had received a call from a contractor about an hour earlier, saying workers smelled gas and may have hit a line, company spokesman Brian Manthey said. The company sent out a crew, and at least one of its workers was injured, he said.

news wanted:

I think this is an important story and would benefit from other NowPublic contributors working on it. I've flagged it as News Wanted and invite others in relevant locations to look for more evidence.

WISN-TV Milwaukee reported,

The blast left only the bell tower standing and flames were coming from a next door house.
A firefighter told the TV station there was an initial call at 1:19 pm. reporting a strong odor of gas and about a minute later the church exploded.

Several houses and a local daycare were evacuated.
The First Baptist Church was built in 1912 or 1913. "We will rebuild," church member Beth Jennings said. "We will do whatever it takes to keep our ministry here."
