Eileen Syms of Grand Island celebrated her 80th birthday by jumping out of an airplane to skydive, instead of having a party. It was her first skydiving experience.

Channel 2 news on your side followed her through her skydiving experience, from the instructions on how and what to do in skydiving to the actual jump over Niagra County  and landing. This took place at the Frontier Skydiving Center, in Newfane. Eileen has told Channel 2 news that this was something that shes always wanted to do. She claimed to have "a bucket list" of things that she wants to accomplish.

Eileens daughter tried talking her out of  skydiving, but Eileen wasnt having any of that. She was determined to do this. So she went for it..in a tandem jump with instructor Joe Eberhardt at 10,000 feet high. They had 40 seconds of free fall and at 5,000 feet, Eileen pulled the ripcord and floated in the sky until they came for a landing.

Eileen Syms said that she has also gone scuba diving and horse  back riding and would like to do it again sometime.

Eberhardt said that he also had skydived with a 86 year old woman and a 93 year old man.

Eileen Syms says, "You are only as old as you feel and never let anyone talk you out of something you really want to do."
