82nd Airborne Division Dispatched To Haiti To Provide Security
Fresh off U.S. President Barack Obama's promise for "swift and unwavering" help for Haiti earthquake victims, the "All-American" 82nd Airborne Division has been dispatched to aide rescuers in Haiti.
The 82nd Airborne Division is an infantry division under the command of Major General Curtis M. Scaparrotti based in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
First 100 soldiers will leave the base today. Another 800 soldiers will follow on Friday. The mission will focus on providing humanitarian support and disaster relief, but soldiers will also provide security, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.
Security in quake-hit Haiti is a subject of concern. During the quake, one of the country's largest prisons was destroyed. There were reports of hundreds of escaped inmates. People arriving in Haiti are reporting hearing gunshots out on the streets. Looting is also reported to be quite widespread.
