9/11 truthers generally believe that the terror attacks on 9/11 were either an "inside job" or the result of gross negligence on behalf of the US security apparatus. The 9/11 Truth Movement's adherents are called Truthers. A tremendous amount of media exists on the Internet, perhaps the most popular being Loose Change. The most recent truther to make the news was Charlie Sheen, who is demanding to meet with US President Barack Obama

It's worth pointing out that the 9/11 Truth Movement is not a single, cohesive group, but a term used to describe those who hold varying theories

Why do the 9/11 conspiracy theories persist? Before the 9/11 Commission report was released, conspiracy theories blossomed in the absence of any coherent official version of events. Even still, the 9/11 Family Steering Committee says that only 1/3 of their questions were actually answered during the 9/11 Commission.  Despite the publication of the findings of the 9/11 commission, there are still too many holes in the official story for everyone to just take it at face value.

List of unanswered questions posed by the 9/11 Family Steering Committee

While I don't personally think that 9/11 was an inside job, our security structure obviously failed to a frightening degree, and it's well worth questioning why then-President George W. Bush didn't take the specifically-documented threat of hijacked airplanes used as weapons more seriously, or why, when the terror attacks were underway, no US fighter planes were deployed as per pre-existing plan.

Also, the video footage of the plane hitting the pentagon was never released, and eyewitness testimony varies widely as to what exactly happened: some witnesses basically describe seeing a missile, and not a plane.

Here's the 9/11 conspiracy theory wiki; the main variants are:
LIHOP: Let it happen on purpose: foreknowledge of the plot
MIHOP: Make it happen on purpose, i.e. inside job, with controlled demolitions of the WTC towers and teh shooting down of Flight 93 to flesh out the "story".

Funny how the 911 truthers are the same folks who are now calling people who actually tell the truth, conspiracy theorists in regards to the expansion of the federal government under what many see as their Messiah in Chief.

Thanks for this, jordan.

I do believe the Govt. was culpable in the disaster.  I do not believe they engineered it, nor that they realized the extent of the damage that would occur.  I believe, rather, that they turned a blind eye and then actively participated by sending a missile into the pentagon after the 3rd plane's passengers successfully thwarted the terrorists.  For that I believe someone should be held accountable.  That, I think, was a deliberate act against their own people.  The main event, however, I think they knew about it and sat back and allowed it in order to justify a dearly desired war that otherwise just did not have the political will behind it.

Just let me add for the benefit of any "doubting Thomas":), conspiracy is very real and conspiracy theorists are necessary to exposing conspiracy. It is a part of world politics, has happened, and will continue to happen. IMO, anyone attempting to suppress 'conspiracy theorists' theory' are in fact attempting to suppress a necessary avenue to truth.

Rhonda: I agree! My favorite conspiracy (which is not a theory but a fact) is that the perennial director of the FBI denied the existence of organized crime (i.e. the Mafia) for decades and at the same time had, as his good friend, one of the top leaders of organized crime. It wasn't until a Mob informant appeared before the Senate, and a major chance bust of organized crime figures took place in upstate New York,  that the honorable J. Edgar Hoover reluctantly acknowledged the existence of organized crime. Every FBI agent under Hoover knew that the Mafia (La Cosa Nostra) did, in fact, exist, yet they kept their collective mouth shut for decades. It is by no means an exaggeration to say that the Mafia made bigger profits than virtually every American corporation combined. Yet America's leading law enforcement agency, from the director on down, denied the existence of a criminal organization that every kid like me, that grew up in Queens New York, came in contact with on a daily basis. I get a kick out of those that dismiss conspiracy theories with the flippant assertion that "it's impossible for a major governmental conspiracy to have occurred, given the amount of people involved, because someone would have opened their mouth and blown the lid off the conspiracy a long time ago." HA!

Thank you Rhonda for the turn on to "Conspiracy and Closed Minds". BTW: One of the most obnoxious and condescending  proponents of anti-conspiracy theory, on the radio airwaves today, is Michael Medved, the  movie critic, former lawyer, and former liberal/progressive who now claims to be a "conservative". Only do the ignorant, the fearful, and the blind ideologues not question their government . . . .

My pleasure, Rory! Anytime! Thank you for the take on Michael Medved!

"Only do the ignorant, the fearful, and the blind ideologues not question their government . . . ."

The indoctrinated mind is blind, unfortunately so!

PS And this is frightening!

One of the problems was the legal constraints that the FBI and other agencies, such as the CIA were placed under by the Clinton administration when it came to shared intel. To compound the problem, the former FBI director, Louis Freeh, refused  to upgrade the FBI's antiquated computer system during his reign. There is more than enough blame to go around considering the fact that Bush was only in office for about eight months (sound familiar?). I personally know some people that were on the scene that day at the WTC and that survived. They have some questions too . . . .
