9-12 Protest Rally Attendence Estimates Vary Widely
The consensus among news organizations and political pundits is that the 9/12 government protest rally, that took place in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, turned out more protesters than expected. Estimates as to the amount of protesters vary widely, however, with some estimates below 100,000 and others approaching or surpassing 1 million.
Saturday's "Tea Party" rally in Washington, D.C. may have far exceeded almost all expectations.
Some liberal websites and blogs are putting the number much lower, with estimates ranging anywhere from 20,000 to 70,000. Based on photographs and video footage of the event the numbers would appear to be much larger than those estimates. The ticketed area of the National Mall alone has a capacity of 240,000 and the crowd clearly filled that area and beyond. The public access area of the Mall holds nearly 950,000 and photographs of that area show it to be at or near capacity, although it has been reported that other groups were holding events in that area.
Many right-wing pundits wildly overestimated the number of conservatives who marched on Washington, D.C. this past Saturday. In actuality, ABC News estimated that between 60,000 and 70,000 people were at the rally. Certainly, that's a significant amount of people, but two million it is not. Fox News put the number at "tens of thousands," a figure echoed by the Wall Street Journal and The Associated Press.
FreedomWorks, the main organizers of the Tea Party event in Washington this past weekend, has dramatically lowered its estimate for the size of the crowd at the event from 1.5 million, a number the group now concedes was a mistake, to between 600,000 and 800,000 people -- though this is still substantially more than the tens of thousands that most mainstream media outlets have estimated, and which FreedomWorks wholeheartedly rejects.
As many as 30,000 demonstrators are expected to congregate first thing this morning at Freedom Plaza and march from the White House to Capitol Hill, where grassroots organizers and Republican members of Congress, including Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina and Representative Tom Price of Georgia, will speak.
The line of protesters spread across Pennsylvania Avenue for blocks, all the way to the capitol, according to the D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency.

The only thing certain about the Tea Party was that the mainstream media would cover it up or lie about it. Virtually every reporter and editor under 40 in America today is a culturally illiterate, intellectually dishonest, professionally corrupt left-wing propagandist who uses half truths to deceive the voters in our God-given republican democracy. This in and of itself is evil. Americans should universally and permanently boycott and bankrupt NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, MSNBC, the Associated Press, New York Times, Washington Post, Time, Newsweek, NPR and every major daily newspaper. All are on the brink of bankruptcy right now and need only a shove over the cliff.

Marco: I understand where you're coming from, but I would never want to see any media outlet shut down in America no matter what they say or espouse. In my opinion, as long as a free and open "free speech" playing field is maintained, in America, truth will ultimately prevail.

Amazingly you don't say Fox News - I wonder why?

If variety does not exist in the news regarless of its media, people are less informed. This is never a positive situation. Indeed it leads to states of crisis such as the current state of the economy.
Citizens should strive to learn as much as they can from a variety of sources and use that to develope theor own truth. After all, no media source will ever tell the sole and whole truth. It is impossible due to spin and targeted audience demographics. Plus, the news exists to sell itself.

It seems there is a faked photo of the 9-12 rally circulating.
Maybe the large guesstimates have been calculated using the faked photo.
The fake photo lacks landmarks that should be seen in a photo taken in September 2009.

That photo is of the Promise Keepers Rally. Folks are not using that photo for estimates. There were enough photos taken by traffic cameras and news folks on top of surrounding buildings.

No matter the Rally the opposing side will underestimate the numbers and the sponsors will overestimate the numbers. The National Parks Service used to give numbers until the Million man march where they estimated a lower number then the Million Man March folks stated. Since then they make no such counts. The local police were prepared for 40K they related that it was about 10x larger then expected. I would take the position to take photos from the Obama inaugural and compare them with confirmed shots on the ground. One of the speakers took photos from the stage and sent them to me. Tens of thousand is not right and 1.2 million isn't right. Hundreds of thousand is better.
Thanks for the informative story that takes a look at crowd counts

I have done my own study base on a devised stationary methodology and calculation which you can find here:deathbymedia.wordpress.com/2009/09/22/912-washington-dc-tea-party-rally-crowd-estimation/It's backed by visual evidence (pictures and clips) all available in the same entry, plus determining the boundaries of the rally and calculation of the final tally derived from the density of the crowd at each given block. My calculus puts the figures around 130k up to 160k.
