90999 Text "Haiti": $10M Raised, But Will Be There In 90 Days?

Yesterday, it was reported that $3 million were raised via the text message fundraising campaign to help survivors of the deadly earthquake in Haiti. Today, that number has been surpassed and is now exceeding $10 million, according to the U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Secretary Of State Clinton said she will be heading to Haiti to inspect the damage and meet the Haitian President Rene Preval on Saturday.

"We've raised more than 10 million dollars from more than one million donors through the SMS Haiti relief campaign," Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said.

"It has become the single largest mobile donation campaign ever," said the chief US diplomat, who will travel to Haiti on Saturday.

One of the ways to contribute to the text message initiative to raise funds for Haiti was to text "Haiti" to number 90999, which automatically resulted in a $10 donation to the American Red Cross. The $10 was charged to the user's phone bill.

However, there have been allegations that the money raised might be withheld for up to 90 days - or the amount of time it will take those who have donated to pay off their phone bills, which means the money won't reach the earthquake victims in the critical days after the disaster. In response, many of the major telecommunication companies have agreed to front the pledges and release the funds immediately.

It is not clear if the customers who have donated can expedite the release of the funds by paying their bills sooner.

The Red Cross should burn some of its reserves/money in the meantime, until it gets the payments from donations. For example, if it raises $10 million from the campaign, it should maybe write down $9 mill or so as uncollectable and then dip into its reserves temporarily to provide support NOW. Then they can replenish their reserves as the cell phone bills are paid.

It was announced earlier on TV today that the Red Cross is one organization that will spend the money on aid before they actually receive it.  They want the pledges to keep coming in and they said that if people know the money is getting to Haiti right away that the texting will continue.

I agree with F.

keep the money in reserves,go in after wards and rebuild the whole city...It's not like they need it all now, look at all the major corporation donations coming in..For $10 million you can probably build every family in haiti a new home, plus you will stimulate the economy...Think ahead before you start dispensing millions of dollars...

The Red Cross is contributing an initial $1 million from the International Response Fund to support the relief operation, and has opened its warehouse in Panama to provide tarps, mosquito nets and cooking sets for approximately 5,000 families.www.redcross.org/portal/site/en/menuitem.94aae335470e233f6cf911df43181aa0/?vgnextoid=15c0c5a210826210VgnVCM10000089f0870aRCRD

You realize there is 9,833,000 people in haiti. 10 million equals out to about a dollar per person. Its peanuts compared to the amount U.S. has pledged. people should stop donating to red cross and realize it rarely makes it to where it should be going. same as 9/11 relief funds

Ten million is just the initial payout-- the very first check they cut, essentially. There will be lots more money after that. They will release more numbers once they have some idea what more is needed.91 cents of every dollar contributed to the Red Cross winds up directly benefitting the victims of disasters. That's a much, much better rate of return than most charities. (The other nine cents goes to things like keeping the lights on, paying for the 800 numbers, and so on.)People definitely should keep donating. The RC does good work.

Are you stupid? I know this is a response that is two weeks later then you posted but, Im sorry I had to say something. The earthquake hit Porte-au-Prince, not the entire island. There is 9,800,000 in total. They dont all live in a city that is 50 miles wide. What you said was ignorant and every penny that is donated to Haiti will make a difference. As of today there is over 15 million that has been donated strictly through the Red Cross, and yeah they take money out of that to cover there expenses, but that 15 Million doesnt even include the millions from other organizations that are donating plus the many sports teams and players that are donating that have families down there. Your ridiculous. If you dont have anything nice to say or that you are going to donate money, or your time to help, then please keep your mouth shut.

give all the money to me. so i can spend it on whatever i like and never have to work again. dont give it to those aids infested inbreds that pass aids along to each other and reproduce children like rats then cant even give them proper care. dont give those animals anything. they are unproductive and useless to society. death to all haitians , i hope the aftershock kills the rest of them. seriously, i mean it 100%. i hate those ugly animals. they only good thing they are useful is at being slaves. remember the good times when the french owned them? also, dont forget how haitians are cannibals and eat human flesh and practice voodoo black magic and pray to the devil. dont forget this !! they sacrificed their own people for the voodoo gods.   haitians are evil animals. god shall unleash his fury upon them. HALLAEUJA MY BROTHERS .   AMEN !!!!!

i can't believe the garbage that is coming out of your mouth.  what make you think that you are any better than these people.  why is your life worth more.  it saddens me that in this day in age there is still this backwards ass way of thinking.  these people are human beings, not animals, and they have the right to life just as everyone on this planet does.  notice how hypocritical you are, you condemn them because they kill each other, yet you demand that they all be killed.  since your all about killing, why don't you get a gun, put it to your temple and pull the trigger.  now is the time to unite and do some good for the world.  racist thoughts aren't welcome.  lets help the Haitians rather than kick them while they're down.ps. real brave of you to put up a fake name and talk all this trash.  why don't you put up a real name and address, oh yea thats right, you won't cause your a bitch and you know you'll get fucked up

Way to go Mike. Finally someone has said it. Fuck the Haitians. Why the hell are we as Americans sending so much fucking money and help to them? What the fuck do they do for us. We are in a major crises with peopling getting kicked out of their homes all day every day in America, yet we are so quick to send millions of dollars to a society that has contributed nothing to this world other then disease and poverty. I hope all you people sending money over there can sleep at night knowing that you are helping out worthless people meanwhile some child in America is going to sleep in the streets tonight because his parents got evicted from their homes from those asshole bankers. You all need to get your priorities straight.

thank u!!!! wheres this money for our U.S. troops?  people need to open thier eyes AMERICA? YOUR COUNTRY? WHERE YOU LIVE? is in trouble

There is no such thing as worthless people.  The U.S. has systems in place for homeless citizens.  If you feel you are serving mankind best by helping the people in America whom you described, then by all means do so.  Please do not condemn those who help others, though.  In the U.S., most people have family or friends to turn to in the event of foreclosure.  In Haiti, such support is much less certain.  The economic housing crisis here did not co-occur with a devastating death toll such as that in Haiti.  We help one another out everyday by paying our taxes, and if you give on top of that voluntarily, God bless you. It is never wrong to help a fellow human in need.  While you persecute those who choose to help Haitians, you ignore the greed of celebrities who own multiple homes worth millions of dollars, individuals with six figure incomes with luxurious lifestyles, and others who have plenty to spare.  If anyone is to be accused of misappropriation of assets, it's the greedy and selfish, not those whose intentions are honest and generous.  I sleep well at night knowing that my bed is less comfortable than I would like, I can hear my neighbors a little too well, and I cannot afford the latest trends, but that someone else suffering from tragedy is a little less uncomfortable because I gave all I had to spare.

You should be ashamed of yourself. I can't even believe evil to your degree exists on this planet. May God have mercy on your soul, as well as the souls of your fellow Klansmen. If you even have one that is.

"Mike," I am deeply saddened that you feel this way. It shows a true lack of character, soul and conscience in your life. It might just be true that you are, in fact, in a greater need that the people of Haiti - your soul is so deeply damaged that you cannot conceive of what it takes to show any sort of love or compassion for those who are in need. As to the statements above referring to the Hatian people as being nothing but a bunch of voodoo-worshipping, godless cannibals, I can tell you first-hand that sentiment is not true. I have a very dear, personal friend who is a Lutheran (CHRISTIAN) Pastor, whose congregation is located in Port-Au-Prince. He does not practice voodoo worship, nor has he eaten any of his friends or neighbors for dinner. He preaches and teaches the Word of God, as found in the Holy Bible, a book that I am sadly afraid you have never been introduced to. Please take some time to find one and become aquainted with it. It might just change your life. I learned, just this evening, that Paul and his family survived the earthquake, but many of their parishoners did not. The money being donated and spent for their relief, although it cannot possibly reverse all of the damage done, it can certainly help aid those who are still looking for survivors, and can help provide food and some semblance of shelter for those people who ARE still alive. Today, when I do my daily prayers, I will include you in them as well as the people of Haiti and all of those donating their time, effort and money to help them. I am going to pray for ALL of you to see the light of compassion and hope. They need it to regain their lives, and you need it to begin yours.

To say I am stunned, as an American, a veteran, and a human being, to read some of these remarks is an understatement of the highest order. Racism, regardless of from whom, has no place in society.  To presume that racism is a white only problem is to disregard the sense of entitlement that white society in America foisted onto the black community with affirmative action, and entitlement programs like welfare and medicaid.  While the responsibility for racism is not an American issue, but rather a world wide issue, (lets face it, America wasn't the only country that based it's labor pool on slavery), the fact remains that in America, with our 'liberties' we provided a fertile breeding ground for racial hatred that exists to this day, (just look at mr. hock, (couldn't get the c in there I see, for his screen name, and his fan club.) To deny humanitarian needs to any people, be they Hatian, or be they American, is to deny humanity in general.   Certainly America needs to better address it's own social ills, but the day that America turns it's back on the world is the day that the world will finally irrevocably turn it's back on America.  Sure, you can argue that it's already happened, but to be fair, no it hasn't.  It is efforts like the one in Hati that make America the symbol of hope and freedom all over the face of the earth.  Ignoring that is at least as cruel as it is to play the homeless card in liue of helping out in Hati's time of dire need. There are services, and options for Americans, for the Hatians, today, the only option is starvation, death, and anarchy should not the world, (not just America), step up to bring hope, and relief to the people so horribly affected by this disaster. And for Shavar Brown, seriously, really?  You don't care what nobody thinks, and then you come off with give the money to your black rear?  You prove the point of my statement above.  Why not try something new and innovative, like, oh I don't know, get a job?  And don't tell me you can't, there's plenty of work for uneducated, self rightious bigots out there who think the world owes them something.  Just ask Al Sharpton.

Hey Mike Hock, Robert M, eddie b, and shavar brown -- what you do you guys think of humanity? I'd like an outsider's opinion.

By the way, I'm texting in my donation right now

I have a feeling that the negative posts are by the same person. But the Haitian Government was allegedly warned 2 years ago, that's one thing. The other thing is how do you have babies when you can not feed yourself, it's good that if you have the money and you can donate, but if you don't don't feel guilty you didn't cause any earth quakes. And I still have an image of two people fighting over a pair of sandals from a collapsed sandal factory, not to  wear, but to sell, it reminded me of New Orleans and Katrina.

mike hock (aka = cock) is one bitter man. wonder wtf his parents were thinking when they named him. but at least they got it right . . .

M Beck

Ya'll missed it, pronounce it phonetically: Mike Hock = MyC Ock = My Cock.

Anyway, my priorities are just fine. I donate food, cash and material goods to American efforts as well provided that A. I think the donation goes to someone who didn't do it to themselves by being an idiot with their money, B. It does NOT go through the government or any other for-profit enterprise and C. there is a reasonably easy way to make the donation.

$10 in most other countries goes a LOT farther than it does here, we have too many d*mn regulations driving up costs on everything so sending this donation helps out more people and helps them more than it does here.

Finally, three cheers for JennieDH! She said it as well as I could if not better. I agree 100%.

I am very disappointed in how my fellow Americans think, Mike and all others who agree with him, lets hope god forgives you later in life, when you clear the path of your cloudy mind.

I feel really bad to this country. Haiti has been though alto within these last few years...as well as America (Tragedies within the US could have been prevented) for example: 9/11. There is no way to prevent an earth quake or hurricane katrina...All people can do is prepare for the worse. I think Haiti would have been able to save alot of people's lives if they would have taken heed to what scientist were telling them in 2008. Scientists who detected worrisome signs of growing stresses in the fault that unleashed this week's devastating earthquake in Haiti said Thursday they warned officials there two years ago that the country was ripe for a major earthquake. Their sobering findings, presented during a geological conference in March 2008 and at meetings two months later, showed that the fault was capable of causing a 7.2-magnitude earthquake - slightly stronger than Tuesday's 7.0 quake that rocked the impoverished country. Though Haitian officials listened intently to the research, the nearly two years between the presentation and the devastating quake was not enough time for Haiti to have done much to have prevented the massive destruction. Their conclusions also lacked a specific timeframe that could have prodded quick action to shore up the hospitals, schools and other buildings that collapsed and crumbled Tuesday. At the time of the earthquake, which the international Red Cross estimates killed 45,000 to 50,000 people, Haiti was still trying to recover from a string catastrophes. In 2008 alone, it was hit four times by tropical storms and hurricanes. The country also suffers from a string of social ills including poverty, unstable governments and poor building standards that make buildings vulnerable in earthquakes. "Haiti's government has so many other problems that when you give sort of an unspecific prediction about an earthquake threat they just don't have the resources to deal with that sort of catastrophe. As the Americans we should try our best to help others who are in more need. Yes we have people loosing homes. But the have lost entire families! show compassion. Treat others like you would want to be treated. As Americans...we have to help otherwise other countries will be against us....and may join up with terrorist groups and form larger groups to come against us. I myself am a US Army Soldier....and yes...I am Black...Which doesn't matter...Its bad enough we ae fighting other countries during this time...why???? make it worse on us by NOT helping. Its what us Americans do..show compassion, honor and selfless service.

I'm not about to make as harsh a comment as above. But do these people expect to practice voodoo and not expect repurcussions? God is real people, open up your eyes. The bible prophesied all of this. Haitans made a pact with the devil in 1791, a high price to pay for getting 'black freedom from slavery'. Haiti's neighbouring countries have not suffered anywhere near the same plight as this cursed country. open up your eyes. There is more to life than what can be seen. It is NO coincidence that our most hugest and horrific earthquakes this century have been felt in full force in Voodoo-worshipping capitals. Both completely representative of turning their back on Christ. That said, I do have sympathy on the people. I just hope people realise this IS god's work, and use it as a prime example not to turn your back on Christ.

We should donate Mike Hock and the same guys like him to Haiti, so they can enjoy a better life there.
