Absurd prostitution prosecution and hypocritical attack on Obama
Alexis Wright is a zumba instructor in Kennebunk, Maine. She is accused of prostitution with a list of men. A list, she herself created. All acts were consensual. Sex of course between consenting adults is purely legal. Prostitution is the only offense though that is completely illegal in most parts of the nation, when done for money. Of course when prostitution is illegal it drives it underground to the blackmarket where pimps exploit women and sometimes underaged girls. They might beat them. Since they are already breaking the law, they don't usually care about assault and battery. Ms. Wright's clients lives are pretty much ruined.
One man, who is a public schools coach, had to resign. What is ironic is that police won't for months release the name of a cop who on camera brutalizes a suspect (and should be held to a higher standard than the general public) but they are too eager to release the names of someone who engaged in a consensual act with a fellow adult. Ms. Wright didn't have sex with clients in alleyways. She did it within her own business. That she is being prosecuted just shows how the anti-sex religious right-wing still dominate so much of our public policy. The same group who want to keep criminal laws on adultery, reinstate homosexual sex as a crime and enforce obscenity, are the strongest supporters of these prosecutions.
On a completely different topic, Republicans are attacking the Obama adminstration for the attack on the consulate in Benghazi, Libya, where our American ambassador to that nation was killed, along with other Americans. A horrible event and an event where the Obama adminstration could have of course done better. But remember after the 9/11 attacks, what did conservatives say then?
They told us to get behind the president, though over 3000 Americans were killed on that day. An attack that dwarfed the Libyan attack. This was a massive attack against the U.S. during the watch of President Bush II (whose adminstration messed up in numerous ways) and he didn't get a 1/10th of the criticism directed against President Obama. Why did the incompetence of Bush, bring cries to rally around him?
Lastly, I was watching a television commerical against President Obama and never before I felt so amazed by an ad. Well, maybe the Rick Perry ad attacking gays, but that one at least brought forth many funny parodies. It was an ad by a self styled Black Republican PAC (yes all 20 of them) attacking President Obama for supporting gay marriage, abortions and heaven forbids, removing a deity from the Democratic party platform. Actually, a reference to a god was shoved back in by the Democratic party leadership during the convention.
The fact is, more and more African Americans (like all racial groups) are supporting the rights of gays to marry the person that they love. That there was debate in the Democratic party to a reference to a god, at least shows that the Dems arn't knee jerk theocrats like the Republican party. After all, one party of theocracy in our nation is enough.
