Ady Gil loses bow to Japanese whaling vessel

The Ady Gil, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's new boat, was neary sunk in a collision with the Shonan Maru 2, a Japanese whaling ship.  According to Sea Shepherd Conservation Society spokesman Chris Aultman, the Ady Gil, formerly known as Earthrace,  was struck on purpose, the latest casualty in the whale wars. The collision was caught on video.

"Luckily no one was in the bow of the vessel at the time of the collision or they certainly would have been killed instantly."
The Ady Gil is a new vessel, only unveiled in October 2009.
A companion vessel, the Bob Barker, was used to rescue the crew, Mr. Hansen said. That boat, a former Norwegian whaling ship, was named after the former American game show host who donated $5 million to the group.

Japanese whaling fleets operate in the South Atlantic near Antarctica, exploiting a loophole in the international whaling ban.
The Japanese Whaling Association calls Sea Shepherd “a terrorist group.”
However, the whaling fleet is clearly not a scientific operation; Sea Shepherd, led by Greenpeace founder Paul Watson, is the only group doing anything to hinder their practices.

The Ady Gil was the former Earthrace powered by BIOFUEL and completed a round the world in a record breaking 60 days, 23 hours, 49 mins. It's been abandoned although the 6 crew including the captain are safe.
