Aeromexico Flight 576 Hijacked In Mexico City

Aeromexico Flight 576 with 112 passengers has been hijacked at the airport in Mexico City by unidentified hijackers. At least five people have been detained by Mexican authorities. All passengers have been released from the plane.

The plane, a Boeing 737, flew to Mexico City from Cancun. The hijackers threatened to blow up the plane unless they were allowed to speak to President Felipe Calderón. No bombs have been found.

According to reports on CNN, the hijackers are believed to be Bolivian. All planes destined for Mexico City were diverted to other airports during the hijacking.

TV Azteca reports President Calderón was at the airport getting ready to depart when the incident began, but cancelled his flight.

Apparently the hijackers were not able to get into the plane's flight deck.

Los secuestradores no pudieron ingresar a la cabina de los pilotos, debido a que está sellada. Pidieron a los pilotos que la aeronave diera vueltas en el aire, pero éstos respondieron que no tenían combustible, por lo que tuvieron que aterrizar.

We can be thankful the passengers were released. Hopefully Mexican athorities can negotiate the release of the crew.

The conditions leading to negotiations with hijackers to reach agreements and implentation of agreements depend on several factors which have been identified from other international disputes. Primarily how each party views the meaning of terrorism, establishment of mutual stalemate, party willingness to negotiate, conflict duration, political affiliation pacts, and creating turning points for negotiations.
