Afghan Runoff Election a Bad Idea

Afghan President Hamid Karzai agreed to a Nov. 7 runoff  election president. US president Barack Obama and other international leaders have pressured Karzai to agree to this election.
It is not a good idea.  It would be better to accept his election and get on with the war. Another election will only get more voters killed or mutilated by the terrorists.

The US and others want less corruption, better and efficient government and democracy.  In the first round of the election there were many reports of fraud, most blamed on Karzai. President Obama has even said a decision to send more troops to Afghanistan would be irresponsible. He may wait until the runoff election to decide on how many more troops. This in effect puts the war on hold for maybe two more months, meaning more deaths and destruction. The Taliban are even now taking over more territory every day. They need to be stopped now.

Afghanistan is not and has never been and may never be a democracy. It does not need another election which will make little difference. Whoever wins will still face a growing war, a backward country, corruption and many other problems.  What Afghanistan needs is a government now, more NATO and Afghan troops and a strategy to win or give up, not half measures. Once the war is won then steps can be taken to build a perfect democracy.

Afghanistan needs a ruler that represents the people. Plain and simple.

True, but in the middle of a war with Taliban controlling half the country, it is difficult to determine who  the majority wants.
