Boys Forced Into "Ancient Custom" Of Sex Slavery In Afghanistan

Our TV news carried an article about Afghanistan Boy Dancers this morning.  I hadn't heard about this 'cultural' aspect of Afghanistan before, but upon doing a Net search found articles dating back to 2007 regarding these boy dancers or bacha bazi.  These young men, many who have found themselves homeless and without resources have fallen under the influence of more powerful older men and found themselves living lives of virtual slavery.

The practice of taking young boys to perform as dancers at private parties is known as bacha bazi (literally, "boy for play") and is an Afghan tradition with very deep roots. Under Taliban rule, it was banned, but it has crept back and is now widespread, flourishing also in the cities, including the capital, Kabul, and a common feature of weddings, especially in the north. The bacha dancers are often abused children whose families have rejected them. Their "owners" or "masters" can be single or married men, who keep them in a form of sexual slavery, as concubines. The bachas are usually released at the age of 19, when they can get married and reclaim their status as "male", though the stigma of having lived as a bacha is hard to overcome. The Afghan authorities and human rights groups are aware of the plight of bacha boys, but seem powerless to stop it.

We already know about the status of women in Afghanistan.  This country has a long way to go before it can join the civilized countries of the world.  News like this makes me wonder why our people are in Afghanistan at all.

One of the most disgusting things i have ever heard of.  The practice didn't disappear under the Taliban, it just went private.

I agree, Barbara.

We should seize Pakistan's nukes ourselves, move them out and then get the hell out of there.

Have you read 'The Kite Runner'? This is mentioned in that book - one of the young boys is taken from an orphanage and made to dance for this really awful gross older man. It's sick for sure.
