Afghanistan: We Must Finally Face The Facts

Parallels between the collapse of the Soviet Union and America are almost eerie, especially the dire political and economic consequences suffered by both countries as the direct result of engaging in an unwinnable war in Afghanistan, though the USA has gone much further by bleeding itself dry in the quagmires of Iraq and Pakistan as well.
As the US economy inexorably edges closer to bankruptcy, the ability of the US Administration to access the funds necessary to continue to project American military force around the world will dry up. The editorial by Canadian Eric Margolis included below summarizes the ruinous situation within Afghanistan in terms of the USA and NATO's inability to ever "win" this war and the inevitable end of this wasteful conflict, the withdrawal of all western military forces, finally leaving the Afghans alone to deal with each other, their differences, evolve their society within parameters they choose, and to try to resurrect their once beautiful country from the ruin we have so callously created and left behind.
His cogent analysis also discusses the total dislocation from both strategic and economic reality of the US Department of Defense, State Department, and the Pentagon as they continue to borrow and pour a dwindling reservoir of taxpayer liability into foolish strategies in both Afghanistan and Iraq which cannot possibly produce the results the Bush Administration continues to promise to an ever more awake and cynical American population.
In Canada, where our involvement in this wasted war is an election issue, voters found out today that the costs on our already tenuous and over-burdened economy could exceed 18 billion dollars, or $1500 per household, by the end of our engagement in 2011. This is not to diminish the human costs as we continue to squander the lives of our soldiers on the altar of appeasement to our American and NATO partners.
Considering the fragility of the global economy, our position in it, and the fruitless waste of life and dollars this dirty little war represents for all Canadians, we must immediately give NATO three months notice that we will be withdrawing all our troops from Afghanistan. Any other course of action would clearly indicate our Government's total inability to accept reality, and their willingness to waste more Canadian lives for worthless political reasons.
Canada must then move forward and build on what we do so well, sparking progressive global change by supporting those groups who take a rational positive stand for democracy and human rights within their own countries, and engaging with all members of the global community in our historical role as calm intermediary, peacekeeper and negotiator for the benefit of all.
For those who savor historical irony, the Soviet Empire collapsed in the years 1989-1991 because of an implosion of its economy brought on by a ruinous arms race with the United States and the heavy costs of occupying Afghanistan.
Seventeen years later came the turn of the world’s other great imperial power, the United States. Lethally bloated by runaway debt, and burdened by 50% of the world’s military spending, the house of cards known as the US economy finally collapsed.
The doomsday news from New York and Washington has obscured most other world affairs. This is unfortunate because for the first time there is a flicker – and I mean only a flicker – of light at the end of the Afghanistan tunnel. It may only be an oncoming truck bomb.
The US-installed Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, revealed last week he had asked Saudi Arabia to broker peace talks with the alliance of tribal and political groups resisting Western occupation collectively known as Taliban. Saudi Arabia had been one of the few nations to recognize the Taliban government and retains considerable influence in Afghanistan and remains a loyal friend of Pakistan.
Taliban leader Mullah Omar quickly rejected Karzai’s offer, and claimed the US was heading toward the same kind of catastrophic defeat in Afghanistan that the Soviet Union had met. The ongoing financial panic in North America lent substance to his words.
The US economy is in grave peril and its big three automakers may soon face bankruptcy. In a crazy sidebar, as Wall Street and the Us banking system faced meltdown, the insouciant Pentagon just announced it would spend $300 million with American `contractors’ to spread pro-US propaganda in Iraq. This remarkable idiocy notwithstanding, Washington could soon run out of money necessary to keep paying for operations in Iraq, and bribing Pakistan with $250-300 million a month to wage war against its own rebellious Pashtun tribes people along the Afghanistan border.
The able and forthright US commander in Afghanistan, Gen. David McKiernan, urgently called for at least 10,000 more troops. US and NATO forces in Afghanistan are increasingly on the defensive, hard pressed to defend vulnerable supply lines in spite of massive fire power and total control of the air.
Attacks on US and NATO convoys are even beginning at the port of Karachi. The prospect of the US spreading a war it can’t win in Afghanistan into Pakistan is military and political madness.

moonwolf, I like this story. It's good stuff. I know it's coming time for Canadian troops to withdraw from Afghanistan and let them work out their problems but there is the tiny problem of having promised some freedom and dignity to the women of that country. What happens to those "uppity" girls who learned to read? No easy answers.

Thanks Barbara,
They will have to fight for it themselves, and we can do much more to support them with aid and money and international assistance. A UN peacekeeping mission for instance. Most experts I have read say that Taliban would disappear over a relatively short time as it is not sustainable as a social movement. It won't be pretty, and it won't be nice, but it couldn't be any worse than 30 years of foreign armies killing hundreds of thousands of their brothers, sisters, moms and dads, turning the country to rubble, pauperizing the whole nation, and propping up any number of corrupt quisling governments.
There are other ways to help, including getting many of those women out of there to complete their educations so that they can return in the future to help foment the changes that are sure to come.

moonwolf, I like this story. It's good stuff. The Top Brass on Britain have been saying this war is unwinnable for some time. Relations between the NATO forces are really ridiculous, with so many armies refusing to fight! Karzai is useless: he seems to be primarly concerned with his dress sense! And he is weak and not a strategic thinker. But as you say, any country which Russia failed with: the omens are very poor. I think we should all get out very quickly! The poppy growers have been treated very weakly. Everyone has known that this needs to be tackled seriously but the attempts have all been half hearted. We are wasting a huge amount of money and many soldiers' lives here. All for nothing.

We need to just leave war at this time. I can see the view of going to Iraq because it is in the middle of the Middle East. But by lying to the people to go there is kind of harsh, We have a constitution that is clearly marked in pen and documented through out the United States History. I really feel bad for our presidency it is truelly going to shit. Look at both of our nominees, I clearly had to vote 3rd Part (Chuck Baldwin) Non the less, I am here to stick around no matter what my country does, and hope for you the people to view me in up coming years. For the sake of America, we need to take action in our country and not believe we are the police of others.
