Wikileaks Cable: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Slapped by Mohammad Ali Jafari

According to one of Wikileaks' Cablegate releases, a heated meeting of Iran's Supreme National Security Council came to a head when Mohammad Ali Jafari, commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards, slapped President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad in the face. No video of Ahmedinejad getting slapped exists; we must rely on the diplomatic cable to tell the story.

The reason Jafari slapped Ahmadinejad? The saber-ratting Iranian president suggested that the government should allow more personal and social freedoms, including relaxing restrictions on the press.

Mohammed Ali Jafari took issue with this, saying that Ahmadinejad was himself responsible for anti-government protests.

Source said that Jafarli then slapped Ahmedinejad in the face, causing an uproar and an immediate call for a break in the meeting, which was never resumed. Source said that SNSC did not meet again for another two weeks, after Ayatollah Janati succesfully acted as a "peacemaker" between Jafarli and Ahmedinejad.
