New debris has been discovered, from the disappearance and crash of Air France Flight 447.

According to the Brazilian defence minister, Nelson Jobim, the possibility that a fire or explosion occurred may be ruled out due to the presence of oil slicks.

Today the hunt for the plane's black box recorders continued but heavy weather has delayed until next week the arrival of deep-water submersibles considered key to finding them.

But even with the equipment, the lead French investigator questioned whether the recorders would ever be found.

For now, the plane's recovered automated messages provide the largest lead in piecing together events of the crash. Automatic system failure reports have led investigators to believe the plane may have broken up in the air.
