Adriana Francesca van Sluijs

One woman, Vasti Ester van Sluijs, told AFP she jumped into a taxi as soon as she heard her daughter's flight — an overnight Air France service from Rio de Janeiro to Paris — had disappeared from the radar over the Atlantic Ocean.

"My daughter, Adriana Francesca, was on the plane," she said, shocked. Her daughter had been on her way to Paris for a connecting flight to Seoul, for business, she added.

The situation with Air France Brazil workers and victim relatives:

Air France workers were absent Monday morning from the company's counters in Rio's international airport. Relatives were sent by the airport administration to a crisis center. Air France booked 150 rooms in a hotel to accommodate relatives as they awaited release of the passenger list.

A couple of high level international company executives are believed to have been on board; Erich Heine and Luiz Roberto Anastacio.

The Michelin tire company said three of its executives were on the flight, including the president of its South American operations, Luiz Roberto Anastacio.

It is also believed that Erich Heine, an executive board member at the German steelmaker ThyssenKrupp, was on board.

An inter-religious ceremony for the relatives and friends of the victims will be held on Wednesday 3 June at 4pm at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.

Nelson Marinho Filho

Nelson Faria Marinho said his son, Nelson Marinho Filho, 40, was on his way to Angola to work as an engineer on an oil platform when the plane went down.

He said he still has hopes his son is alive because he was trained in underwater crisis survival with his work on deep water platforms.

"If there was even a little chance of survival, my son would have survived," Faria Marinho said.

Pablo Dreyfus and Ana Carolina Rodrigues - Newlyweds

In the Rio de Janeiro offices of Viva Rio – an anti-violence non-profit organisation - colleagues are not holding out hopes of survival for Pablo Dreyfus and Ana Carolina Rodrigues.

Dreyfus was a gun violence analyst, and one of Brazil's most senior gun control advocates.

Rodrigues worked in a Rio shantytown keeping kids out of violence.

Moritz Kock

Juliana Ferreira Braga de Aquino

Also among the plane's passengers, according to a German newspaper, was the German architect Moritz Kock, 54. According to the newspaper, as reported in Brazil's Folha de São Paulo, the architect had been visiting Rio de Janeiro (where the flight originated), where he met with associates of legendary Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. According to the German newspaper, Kock had wanted the opinion of Niemayer's team regarding the construction of an aquatic park in Potsdam, Germany, near Berlin.

Juliana Ferreira Braga de Aquino, 29, a Brazilian singer (also pictured above, second from top left), also was among the reported missing passengers.

unlike ships which go missing every single day, it's very unusual for a plane to suddenly disappear over the oceans, especially one this advanced which flies itself or can even be controlled from Paris.

I suppose we will never know what happened.

1
jtr

ships? maybe boats. Ships with 230 people on board don't go missing everyday, and when they do, they have an EPIRB (emergency position indicating radio beacon) that is released when it goes down, or can be set off manually. Jets should have a similar EPIRB that is separate from the plane and will detach on impact or if manually released. Trying to find a plane in 3000 ft of water is quite difficult. When a large ship goes down, they know immediately where to look because of the EPIRB.

2
Jesper Thomsen

I'm actually astonished about the fact that I, on board any vessel over 500GT can push ONE botton and thereby alert basically the whole world transmitting position and type of emergency. I I don't have time for that my EPIRB will do it for me automatically when it is automatically released to floating when going under water.

Obviously flying is so safe that this kind of safety measures are not necessary on a plane.

Well, Sic Transit gloria Mundi.

Though the A330 is the latest and greatest technology let it be known that this aircraft or none in its family can be controlled from anywhere other than the flight deck.  What do you think terrorist would think if airbus or boeing installed this technology allowing for a plane of this class to be controlled from the ground, no less full of passengers!

0
j.j@me

Remote control of commercial aircraft isn't a risk anymore than it getting shot down by a much more serious threat of a SAM.  There are safeguards that prevent just anyone from taking control of an airliner.  The same if not more safeguards would be employed on the ground.  A good safeguard would be an override switch inside the cockpit that would disengage any remote control of a planes controls.  To say that this type of technology is too dangerous because it MIGHT get into the wrong hands is not a legitimate reason not to use employ it.

Rip is very True in the fact that if they are dead

But there is no evidence to suggest that the passengers are dead

With FINGERS CROSSED these people will have evacuated the plane safely if the plane has crash landed in the ocean and everyone is in Life Rafts I Just hope they all Come back Safe And Sound

How extremely optimistic and kind of you...... if only everyone in life had the same outlook as you.  I pray too that everyone is safe.  I really can't imagine the terror people have gone through before the plane crashed....... my worst nightmare.  My heart goes out to all of the relatives and friends concerned.

Evacuation at 500 miles per hour?  Hitting water at that speed (or any speed) is like hitting a brick wall.

Prayers to the victims and families.  God Bless.

This is one among a slew of the latest updates:

The mystery continued to vex investigators from several nations. Flight 447's last communication was an automated message at 10:14 p.m. ET Sunday reporting a technical problem before the jet reached a monitoring station in Cape Verde.

No mayday call was sent, indicating that the jet may have developed a sudden problem. Air France spokesman Francois Brousse said it is possible that lightning hit the jet, although experts expressed doubts that a lightning strike could bring down a major airliner. The last time lightning caused a major crash was in 1963, and significant improvements have been made since then.

This is a lesson to everone flying in a stormy wheather northeast ward(Brazil-Frnace), why don't take the route northewest- then westward( Brazil-California-France).which do you prefer in going home ''fast but dangerously or slowly but safely''

The US military plane departed the air base used by the US Southern Command Air Base in Comalapa, El Salvador at about 6.10pm (2210 GMT, 6.10am Singapore), the Pentagon said.

Earlier on Monday, French Defence Minister Herve Morin asked for US help in locating the disappeared passenger plane, during a conversation with his American counterpart Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

Brazil's air force deployed aircraft with radar and infrared technology during an overnight search for the missing plane, that was carrying 228 people when it disappeared over the Atlantic.

Apparently, this Airbus is relatively new in service, according to the New York Times.

The missing aircraft was relatively new, having gone into service in April 2005. Its last hangar maintenance check was on April 16, Air France said. No Airbus 330-200 passenger flight ever had a fatal crash, according to the Aviation Safety Network.

The new Airbus 330 was a “fly-by-wire” plane, in which signals to move the flaps are sent through electric wires to small motors in the wings rather than through cables or hydraulic tubing. Fly-by-wire systems can automatically conduct maneuvers to prevent an impending crash, but some Airbus jets will not allow a pilot to override the self-protection mechanism.

5
Pythiian1

Apparently, the Airbus 330 is heavily dependent on computers, which didn't allow for a lot of human pilots' control:

No airliner at cruising altitude has been brought down by storms since 1966, when a BOAC Boeing 707 crashed in Japan, killing 124.

Investigators will want to know how the Air France aircraft, with an experienced crew, flew into the middle of a brutal storm that it could not handle. The Airbus flight system will be examined again; some pilots distrust the Airbus family’s heavy reliance on computers (last October a Qantas A330 went into a 600ft dive over the Indian Ocean when the automatic pilot disconnected itself).
