Today, two Su-27 jets collided while rehearsing over the Zhukovsky airfield south east of Moscow. Three pilots survived. The fourth pilot was killed, Colonel Igor Tkachenko, 45, the squadron leader of the Russian Knights. At least five people from the village were hospitalized with serious burns, including a 51-year-old woman with burns covering 80 percent of her body. One family escaped injury, because they happened to be out paying their bills, only to return to burning cartilage in their yard.

The Su-27 has a history of crashes, and a February report suggests that a third of the fleet should be written off or repaired.
The MAKS airshow in Moscow will proceed as scheduled this week, with an expected attendance of 600,000 people.

The crash was not the first involving Su-27 jets, one of the most commercially successful military planes manufactured by Russia. In 2002, a Su-27 clipped the ground and mowed down spectators before exploding into a ball of flame at an air show near Lviv, Ukraine, killing 85 people in the world’s worst air show accident. The crash was blamed on pilot error, and the two pilots who bailed out received prison sentences.
In February, a report compiled after the crash of a MiG-29 on a training flight in southern Siberia found that at least a third of the nation’s fighter jets were unsafe and should be written off or repaired.
In June, officials grounded the air force’s entire fleet of Su-24 bombers after two crashes in three days.
The jets had taken off from the Zhukovsky airfield southeast of Moscow, where the biannual MAKS Aviation Salon will still open as scheduled despite the crash, organizers said.
Even before the crash, the biannual air show, which will open Tuesday with an appearance by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, was expected to be a lower profile event than in previous years. Although the number of spectators — about 600,000 — is expected to remain unchanged from 2007 when the air show opens to the public next Saturday and Sunday, sales are expected to drop this year in the face of less participation from businesses.

Tragical death of Russian Knight
This day during training flightg near Moscow,"Russian Knights" commander colonel
Igor Tkachenko
died in a tragical air accident. It was a training flight for MAX-2009 airshow. Colonel Tkachenko's heavy two-seater fighter "Sukhoi SU-27" ("Flanker") was hit by another single-seater SU-27. Both planes received critical damages. All three pilots ejected. Colonel Tkachenko was the last, who ejected. He spent his last seconds, pointing his burning plane to an empty field, outside an inhabited area, giving his life for people on the ground. Producers and the whole Kerosene Cowboys team present their condolences to colonel Tkachenko's family. We all lost a good friend and true Russian Knight...at 03:38 on August 18th, 2009

from photographs taken just seconds after the two SU-27's hit each other it seems they both bumped into each other with their BELLYSIDE.
on a video clearly to see is that one SU-27 kept on flying UPSIDE DOWN with flames coming from the exhaustpipes for a short time.
the force of the impact when they hit could have damaged the spine of a pilote.
since also aircraft parts were lost during the accident it's obvious that the two SU-27's involved were crippled in further flying and normal landings were impossible.
