Why is it airliners are not made with the thought of the passengers being able to survive in case it crashes? The recent Air France crash into the Atlantic Ocean killing 228 people is case in point. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Air-France-plane-crashes-into-Atlantic-with-228-aboard-/articleshow/4605069.cms... http://www.planecrashinfo.com/.....

A US Airways plane with 155 people on board ditched into a chilly Hudson River on Thursday, apparently after striking at least one bird upon takeoff from New York's LaGuardia Airport, according to officials and passengers.

http://edition.cnn.com/2009/US/01/15/new.york.plane.crash/index.html The plane on the Hudson River was safely landed on top of the water....but the Air France Plane over the ocean was unable to do so. I wonder why planes are not made so they can land safely on the water without the threat of sinking? Perhaps it is a weight problem, or something else...but I think technology can make planes more safe for the flying public.

They should make safety, essential in being able to locate people. Sonar sensors could be on every seat in the plane, and every seat have a parchute, or some design where sections of the cabin are parachuted to safety... Why is there only one black box? Why isn't there several in several locations of the plane? There are cameras everywhere in public life, why not on the planes? This way we have real knowledge of the turn of events that take place.

Why do we not have the ability to know when a storm is brewing, or fog is coming in..to say hey..now is not the time to fly? We have 24 hour weather service, yet we can not coordinate that with our airline schedules? Seems bizarre to me. Why do planes have to be so big? Being big means using a lot more fuel if I am not mistaken. And why wouldn't it be smart to have a caddy plane that flys parallel like the buddy system that carries passengers in one and the luggage in the other.. This way if one plane crashes the other survives....

I just think the airline industry is and has been making mistakes of judgement in their engineering designs and operational management for a very long time. How is it hijackers took control of 4 airliners on September 11, 2001..and crashed them into the WTC and Pentagon....when we knew this threat could happen since the first airliner hijacked was back in 1931. http://www.publicbookshelf.com/fiction/terrorism-global-scourge/aircraft-hijack.....

It sure is a sign of US government incompetence...or is it?

You pose some interesting questions in your posting.  Generally, though, air travel is much safer than private individual travel.  We can be pretty sure that the pilot and co-pilot are competent to run the plane.  I don't think we can blame any poor aviation design on the US government.     Many other countries contribute to airplane design.

Thanks for your comment BMcP.

But I disagree that the US does not have any influence in airline design, or the management in the ways of doing things.
