A bomb exploded near a bus carrying civilians and off-duty members of the military in the northern city of Tripoli early Wednesday, killing 18 including 10 off-duty soldiers, and wounding at least 40 others, security officials said. Suspicion fell on the possibility of al-Qaida-inspired Islamic militants seeking revenge on the military.(AP Photo)

The officials said the dead included 10 off-duty soldiers, from a bomb planted on the side of a main street that detonated as the bus passed. The streets were filled with people heading to work, which contributed to the many casualties, the officials said.

The blast was the first significant bombing in Lebanon in months and comes as the country is making moved to put three years of back-to-back crises behind it.

Lebanese President Michel Suleiman was heading to Syria later Wednesday in the first visit there by a Lebanese president since 2005, aimed at patching up troubled ties between the neighboring countries. A day earlier, parliament approved a long-awaited national unity government between the Western-backed factions of Prime Minister Fuad Saniora and Iranian- and Syrian-backed Hezbollah.

Some officials said the Tripoli bombing may have been the work of al-Qaida-inspired militants seeking revenge for the military's assault last year on their bastion in a nearby Palestinian refugee camp, Nahr el-Bared. Hundreds were killed in the monthslong battle that ended with the militant Fatah Islam group fleeing the camp.

The army described the blast as a "terrorist attack targeting the army directly." A senior military officer told The Associated Press that at least 13 people were killed, including 11 soldiers. He spoke on condition of anonymity for the same reason. The discrepancy with the higher police figures could not immediately be explained.

Yes, there is. You can do a search by topics on the top of the page yet that does not always work, you can always ask an Editor for help or an NW! I am not the expert here. I usually just write my own stuff and so far no one is much interested in my sort of news! Look at the Environment section, not much going on there most of the time! Politics and War always lots of Post about that!

Pinkyberry---liberals in denial refuse to acknowledge jihadis.   Liberal(progressives) seem to blame all Islamic militant activity as a response to Western countries' , especially the USA, who have supported brutal dictators in the interests of securing oil.   And that would be true.  The USA is still supportive of Saudi Arabia.   But the USA only receives 20 percent of its oil from the Middle East.   So the real objective is to maintain peace in an historic violent tribal/feudal land.

But when, after 13 years of war, no-fly programs(to protect Kurds in North Iraq, and Shia in Southern Iraq) the brutal dictator Saddam was sacked, the protests began.   The liberals to this day would prefer Saddam in power, over a liberated Iraq in charge of her own destiny as a free people.

But the point guys like Moonwolf  ignore is that Islamic fundamentalists do not believe in Democratic principles.   They do not believe in women's rights.  They do not believe in homosexuality.  They execute women for adultery.  They don't believe in alcohol or drug consumption.  They execute those who speak against Mohammed.  They execute those who wish to leave the Muslim faith.  They still amputate limbs to punish many crimes. They condone honor killings of their children, who wish to adopt Western customs, or marry for love, as opposed to an arrainged marriage, with the blessing of the parents.  One can be arrested in Saudi Arabia for possession of a Christian Bible.  The hatred of Jewish people by Muslims is well known, but they probably deserve it, right Moonwolf?  They hate Westerners for their customs, religions, women's rights, permissive lifestyles, just about everything.  But liberals continue to blame it on foreign policy mistakes.  The funny thing is, is that Muslim extremists hate liberals the most.   Liberals honor their son's desire to become a woman, a Muslim would never let the son live another day.

But most liberals are cowards.   Guys like Moonwolf will be the first to criticize the Christians as backward haters,  Puritans, Jesus freaks, etc..  But not a peep about Islam.  Hmmmmm??

Ive lived between boundaries and different ideology spiced up with multicultural attacks. I, too have myself convinced that everyone has point of view that need sto be respected. The USA made so much efforts which they believe they are accountable; vice versa, the Al Qaeda, though practiced in islamic way, also believe what they think is right in accordance to their scriptures or belief.
