Should the world be worried about technology getting into the hands of terrorists?  What kind of confidence can we have in security measures that governments guarantee us when al Qaeda collaborators can so easily get clearance to work on highly sensitive projects. Even in Switzerland, a country who's reputation is highly regarded for its security al Qaeda was able to penetrate the CERN facility.

Al Qaeda suspect worked at Swiss nuclear lab

PARIS (Reuters) - One of two suspected al Qaeda collaborators arrested in France this week was a physicist working at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland, CERN said on Friday.

The elder of two Algerian brothers arrested in Vienne in southeastern France on Thursday is suspected of having been in contact with people close to Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), also known as Al Qaeda's north African wing.

You raise some interesting points regarding security screening.  As long as someone keeps a clean sheet and doesn.t get into trouble with the law these security clearances are relatively easy to get.

That's an interesting question to raise regarding different countries' security clearances.

Do I have confidence in the security measures being taken? No. Why? When I go through airport security and see the very same profile of people doing the checks on people as are the source of these conspiracies (like border guards in head scarf's), then I feel queasy. It is like going through an airport security check in 1942 and finding the guards in ledderhosen and geisha gear. What I know is this: the government hasn't taken many measures in the past eight years to ferret out these conspiracies in general government agencies, and has instead gone for the option of using hit squads to take people out when stuff pops up on an ad hoc basis. A scary way to do things!
