Anchorage, AK 1964 Earthquake Then & Now

A magnitude-5.0 earthquake struck Alaska, rattling buildings in Anchorage and other communities.

The quake was was centered 31 miles below ground, at 31 miles west of Anchorage and 15 miles northeast of the village of Tyonek. There have been no immediate reports of damage, and the quake did not generate a tsunami, according to the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center.

A dispatcher with the Anchorage Fire Department said the department had not received any calls about the earthquake, but firefighters at one station pulled trucks out of the garage because the building was shaking so much.

Although Alaska frequently has earthquakes and is the site of the biggest earthquake in North America, a 9.2 earthquake in 1964, most quakes are too small or too remote to be felt.
