Alaska Sentate Ballot Recount: Joe Miller vs Lisa Murkowski Election Results May Be Determined By "Murkowski" Spelling
Never has proper spelling been so important to the outcome of an election result, case in point; the recount underway in Juneau, Alaska, to determine the next Senator for Alaska.
The spelling at issue is for Lisa Murkowski, the GOP Senate candidate, a write in on the Alaska election ballot.
Lisa Murkowski at the time of this post was leading Tea Party backed candidate Joe Miller by over 13,000 votes.
Miller maintains election law must be upheld in scrutinizing the ballots, meaning the ballots must have the oval filled in and either "Murkowski" or "Lisa Murkowski" written next to it to be a valid vote for Murkowski.
Election officials, pointing to past case law, have said they plan to use discretion in determining voter intent on ballots where voters misspell Murkowski's name, with a final ruling coming from the director of the Division of Elections, with input from a state attorney.
Joe Miller is hoping the recount will close the gap with Lisa Murkowski. Miller trails Murkowski by less than 7 percentage points, 34 percent to 41 percent.
... both campaigns have hired attorneys and fundraised to prepare for a legal showdown over contested write-in ballots. Murkowski has brought on a well-known Republican recount attorney, Ben Ginsberg, and started a legal defense fund. Meanwhile, South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint's Senate Conservatives Fund has raised almost $130,000 for Miller's counting fund.
The write-in-ballot counting process is an arduous task that could drag on for days before a winner is determined or even longer if legal challenges are mounted to a significant number of ballots. Election officials have indicated that write-in ballots will be sorted and counted according to their respective state legislative districts, and each district will report its results as they are completed.

I suppose the misspelling in the URL for this story is unintentional irony?
