Burning a church is a reprehensible act at any time.  If it was done because of political partisanship, from hatred of Gov. Palin because of her VP campaign, it is even worse.  But it is possible this was just stupid vandalism.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Gov. Sarah Palin's home church was badly damaged by arson, leading the governor to apologize if the fire was connected to "undeserved negative attention" from her failed campaign as the Republican vice presidential nominee.

Damage to the Wasilla Bible Church was estimated at $1 million, authorities said Saturday. No one was injured in the fire, which was set Friday night while a handful of people, including two children, were inside, according to Central Mat-Su Fire Chief James Steele.

He said the blaze was being investigated as an arson but didn't know of any recent threats to the church. Authorities didn't know whether Palin's connection to the church was relevant to the fire, Steele said.

I dont know if a burning church speficially is "reprehensible' , but arson can be very dangerous and costly. As far as any "undeserved negative attention," I would say, well, arson is illegal. But any other type of negative attention...I'd question whether or not its undeserved. I think this lady is like the female Dan Qyale. Neither of them really has any idea what they're doing.

First off, reprehensible is exactly what this act was, regardless of whether it was a church or any other establishment with people inside...

It doesn't matter who she is, or if that had anything to do with this act.

If it was your house, you wouldn't be so coy.

Have some respect for others and their property...it's the least we can do for each other in this country.

Am I the only one who grows tired of the partisan attitude toward people of different political views?

They are still people, and they were attacked, lives endangered and property destroyed.

It doesn't matter the reason, or who the proposed target was.

For ones who cry equality and justice so much, you would think there would be more of that behavior showing in their own actions?

Change the name, Gender, and color what do you have?  The same feelings should arise from a cross burning in ones yard or a Black Church being burned.  Or how about this, Hanging a Palin by a Noose.

This is where I take real issue with the left.  If it happens to a liberal it is a Hate crime.  If it happens to a conservative.. well it might have been deserved.  Last time I looked at the constitution it provided for equal protection under the law.

I agree burning any building is a crime and wrong.

Yes, any politician is going to get negative attention, there was much negativity against president elect Obama.

I was trying to say that if the arson was because of political opposition toward Palin, then it is something we don't need.

Personally, I didn't vote for Obama, but I would be just as upset about this if it were an establishment he attended, and the same circumstances arose.

We need to stop dividing this country (which happens more culturally, economically and politically than racially) and start working together...wasn't that part of Obama's pitch?

I'm all for that!

We are all, after all, American's aren't we?

158, Thanks for bringing this story.  It seem to me that folks were more interested in the 150,000 dollars worth of clothing then a Million dollars in damage to a Place of Worship.  These folks civil rights have been violated as they will not be able to "freely exercise their religion"  Their faith is more then a building... but they sure are inconvenienced.  Consider how envaded one would feel if ones house were burnt down by arson.

Like you stated, It could have just been kids... It is still a crime and attempted murder as their were people in the building.

They have investigators of all kinds called in including ATF.  So far the only news released is that accelerant was poured at several places around the building including entrances and the blaze was ignited near the main entrance.
