Another Alberta Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) has come under fire for controversial remarks.

Edmonton Calder Conservative MLA Doug Elinski apologized on Monday for a controversial speech he posted on his blog.

In the blog Elinski published the text of a speech he delivers to Junior High School graduates. In the speech he tells girls to smile when they walk into a room.  He goes on to say that there is nothing a man dislikes more than a woman walking into a room that is scowling.  He goes on to say that men know they're going to get s--t without knowing why.

He tells the young women if they want Equal they can get it in small packages at Starbucks.

The blog was taken down Monday afternoon.

Rachael Notley, a New Democratic Party MLA, said that these comments showed that Elinski does not believe in equality for women.  She said these kind of comments set back the issue of equality for women.

Notley has asked Premier Ed Stelmach to make clear that this is not a prevailing sentiment in his conservative caucus.

Elinski apologized today saying that he has no way to defend his remarks.  He has also apologized to the conservative caucuse.  Premier Ed Stelmach accepted the apology and considers the case closed.

Elinski will not be removed from any committees he serves on.

This is the second time in in less than a week that a Conservative MLA has made controversial remarks.  Last week Iris Evans was chastised for her remarks on parenting.

Edmonton-Calder Conservative MLA Doug Elniski apologized late Monday afternoon for controversial comments that he posted on his blog, and insisted that he is not sexist.

Elniski posted the text of a speech on June 13 that he said he gives to junior high school students at Grade 9 graduation ceremonies.

Part of the posting included advice to girls saying, "Ladies, always smile when you walk into a room, there is nothing a man wants less than a woman scowling because he thinks he is going to get s--t for something and has no idea what."

It continues, "Men are attracted to smiles, so smile, don't give me that 'treated equal' stuff. If you want Equal, it comes in little packages at Starbucks."

Elniski's blog was taken down on Monday afternoon.

What is equal would be another questions.

I think we may have different definitions of what may be equal and what may not be.

Equal Rights does not mean that people are equal. A tall Person can not be equal to a short one even if they both agree to equal rights.

However, his remarks are some what condescending. I can see why one would get offended by his words.

Uwe you are correct; however when one is part of the governing caucus one has to watch his words carefully.  All of it is politics and if one is not politically correct he will be jumped on.  Having said that, I think it is the audience it was directed at that makes it offensive.

What amazes me is that how, in this day and age, anyone speak publicly like this and not expect repercussions. Especially a politician. What kind of bonehead is this guy? Why are so many politicans so dumb and how do they get elected? And who are the boneheaded staff members that let this guy get up there and say this stuff? Doesn't he have any handlers?

He is a backbencher, I doubt he has handlers.

This is like something you'd see in The Onion.

It's the ongoing GAFFs of a Conservative party with a large majority in Alberta and virtually no contenders from the other parties.  They're not too worried about what they say.  It's a sad state in Alberta politics that there are no real contenders that could take on the government.

It sure isn't. I don't know what they're thinking when they make statements like that.

The simple answer is usually correct, he didn't think.

I would be offended to be considered equal to a human being like that. Could you imagine the backlash if he was addressing a minority group, black people or natives? Is he telling women to "know their place"?

Like Paschen said,  people have many different oppinions on equal rights. where everyone gets the same but they all want something different.

I'm not condoning Elinski's words but there is some humour and truth to them. words written don't sound the same as those spoken. for all we know the entire class had a chuckle. I for one prefer to see a woman enter a room smiling; beware the scowl...

If you are a woman and you feel you are not being treated equal, then peace out and find yourself a place where you are respected and treated as you will. being equal is about finding that balance. its harder in the industries yes but be constructive about it. and there is more to it than just recieving the same as your XY counterparts. there will always be things only a woman can do and there will always be things only a man can do. Those Feminists, i use the word in the sense of the overzealous, spend all their time making sure everything is right by them often forgetting those things only a woman can accomplish. There is strength in knowing only you can do this, embrace it. and quite emasculating men on tv. ok we get we're sorry for the 60's but i had nothing to do with it.

Yes you can catch more flies with honey (smile) than with pepper (frown).  He didn't say that though.  His Starbuck comment says it all.  If he would have left the equality issue out of his statement, he might have got away with it.

Blue Moon Beer is getting searched for on the internet, and it's no wonder why. Blue Moon beer is the beverage of choice for Sgt. James Crowley of the Cambridge Police Department, who arrested Henry Louis Gates and will be participating in the Beer Summit with Gates and President Obama at the White House. Blue Moon, made by the Coors Corporation, is a Belgian style white beer, made from white wheat – a form of hefeweizen which is referred to as weissbier in its place of origin. (That would be Germany, and they know what they're talking about regarding beer.) I doubt anyone from the White House will need to get fast cash to get a six of Blue Moon Beer.
