On Saturday night in Vegreville, Alberta, the RCMP shot and killed a man after he led officers on a high-speed car chase and then refused to put down a loaded shotgun.

Mounties shot and killed a shotgun-toting man, after he reportedly led police on a high-speed chase last night.

The shooting occurred around 7 p.m. in the town of Vegreville, which is approximately 50 km east of Edmonton, said RCMP Const. Laurel Kading.

"Shots were fired at a male individual who was armed with a loaded shotgun," she said.

"The (man) failed to comply with the RCMP members' directions to put the firearm down."

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, an agency that looks into police conduct, has been called in to investigate.
