Syrian Political Cartoonist Ali Ferzat Beaten by Bashar al-Assad Loyalists

Ali Ferzat, one of the most famous cartoonists in the Middle East, was abducted from his car in Damascus and beaten by goons loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Ali Ferzat's hands were broken in the attack, clearly a warning against those who dare to speak up against Bashar al-Assad's brutal regime. Ferzat's recent cartoons depicted Assad as on the way out.

The 60-year-old cartoonist is highly critical of Syria's regime, and most of his recent work focused on the Arab Spring uprisings. The attackers told Ferzat that the beating was "just a warning". Such violence, however, tends to invigorate resistance rather than discourage it.

Who's up 4 some #graffiti in #Syria to recreate @aliferzat 's cartoons? We need to put it in places everyone will see. #Damascus especially
