An Allusion to Watering the Tree of Liberty

“ What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure.”
- IT IS TIME TO WATER THE TREE OF LIBERTY!
- Written on a sign carried by a protester outside of the townhall meeting in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on August 11, 2009, where President Barack Obama was scheduled to appear to discuss health care reform.
According to New Hampshire law, being strapped at the event did not break any laws. It is legal to carry a loaded weapon in plain sight.
The real and imagined concerns of some citizens, who fear what the country, their country, America, has or may become, with a movement of citizens questioning and petitioning the nation's court system, challenging the legitimacy of the nation's first elected African American president, has made for very raw nerves among some elements in American society.
Much of the fear and apprehension for what was referred to as change began when then Senator Obama tossed his hat into the proverbial ring to run for president of the United States.
It was reported that the day after the election of President Barack Hussein Obama, on Wednesday, November 5, 2008, gun sales and ammunition began flying off the shelves, with gun store owners and dealers saying they have been unable to keep stock on their shelves since that date.
Much of the nation's gun and ammunition buying spree was spurred by the belief that there would be curtailment of American citizens' ability to purchase guns, a belief that fueled anxiety over the constitutionally protected 2nd Amendment right to bear arms.
Some even believe/believed that the Obama administration would put some apparatus in place to go door to door to confiscate guns from gun owners.
According to a recently published book, The President's Secret Service, by Robert Kessler, former President George W. Bush received 3,000 realistic threats a year. The author states threats against President Obama have increased 400%.
At the urging of members of his campaign, then candidate Senator Barack Obama requested and was granted a Secret Service detail early on in his campaign in 2008, the earliest assignment ever provided since the Secret Service began protecting candidates after the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy in June 1968.
Over the months since the election and the inauguration of President Obama in January 2009, as tempers have flared, in some instances, fueled by disinformation, not to be confused with misinformation, an element of panic has set in within segments of the American population.
The past few months have spawned a number of totally false rumors regarding the content of the current bills circulating in the legislature as Congress tackles health care reform, with members hosting townhall meetings across the country to clarify information and answer questions.
Congressional representatives, in many instances, have been met by angry attendees, some angered due to real concerns about their existing health care insurance, others disturbed due to patently false, ugly rumors, among those talk of plans to euthanize senior citizens and nonexistent death panels, with many efforts by elected officials at the townhall meetings, attempting to speak to counter the falsehoods, being drowned out by the crowd.
Republican Right Wing Conservative and former presidential candidate Alan Keyes, who challenges the citizenship of the President, filing suit in court to challenge the legitimacy of the Obama presidency, the man who lost the Illinois senate race to Barack Obama, has stated that it is necessary to stop President Obama before its too late.
Mr. Keyes has not been alone, among elements within the Right Wing conservative movement, in issuing that lament.
As I watched video of the protester in New Hampshire yesterday, pondering the violent history of America's past, as he stood with his gun strapped low on his right side, holding his sign with both hands, I couldn't help but reflect on the paraphrased quote regarding martyrdom, as attributed to Thomas Jefferson, that was printed on the protester's sign, wondering what could have happened if anyone had decided to use that gun.

Before this comment thread, in an effort to deflect from the original intent of this piece, is turned into an exercise in the portrayal of any and all events, past and present, as equal and any and everything mentioned, in relation to anything at the thread, as an occasion to make equal opportunity offenders, I ask that all please consider the piece's intent.
It was meant to acknowledge the almost religious fervor of vehement opposition that many have adopted as relates to the current president and his administration, often with violent overtones and death threats.

Whats your point Karen?
I would appreciate if you would stop using the "race card" for every issue some Americans disagree on. It is getting old and it begins to sound like someone crying wolf. I noticed you did not mention that Alan Keyes was an African-American.

It is you who incorrectly perceived the playing of a nonexistent race card, which is in reality a denial card, when you read the piece, Tikun.
As I stated, previously, race is but one motivator and component of the rage and anger swirling around this President.

I suspect any President who gave over a trillion dollars of (mostly middle-class) money to the wealthiest members of US society (bankers and industrialists) would be equally threatened regardless of his colour.
at 14:17 on August 13th, 2009
No, she said Obama's rate is much higher than Boy George Bush, even though he turned the treasury over to the top 1% of Americans, allowing the middle class to shoulder the burden.
You, of course, did mean Boy George Bush, the wealthy tax cut king?

Good piece, balanced and focused on the issues. As someone who gets accused of playing the race card as well, my response is that I play the hand that was dealt.

I have no race card to play, but I believe that racism is an ancient evil and is the second rail of southern politics.
Jefferson apparently believed in revolution. In his era, he estimated that politics failed to meet paradigm every 50 years.
Telecomunications, and technology, have pushed our world-view through at least three cycles in the last 50 years, new ideals are conceived and become moot faster than the generations can turn.
Every instance where circumstance demands change, and none occurs, serves only to intensify the momentum of progress.
The tree of liberty, if it is nourished with the blood martyrs or even great personal sacrifice, has been dead since before my generation was born; killed by men in defense of the status-quo.
"I have sworn upon the high altar of God Almighty, hostility toward all forms of tyrrany over the mind of man." This revolutionary idea of Jefferson does not require blood. It only needs for us to change our minds, and lay down our swords and shields down by the riverside, where progress and justice flow.

i'll only on how crime has NOT skyrocketed with more guns. on the contrary, crime decreases when criminals know that citizens could be armed to defend themselves.
if guns became illegal, i would quietly leave the country. if you are not satisfied that guns are legal, you should quietly leave the country.
at 10:59 on August 13th, 2009
Although I agree with you about the legality of "legal" guns. How do you explain the violent crime rate in the US? Compare the rates with all other western democricies. Why do guns in the hands of Americans result in so much crime?
at 12:20 on August 13th, 2009
how about we compare ALL the countries with higher crime, higher even than the US? look at the whole picture with countries like Jamaica, Columbia, Mexico, for example, having higher crime. Many of the murders in these other countries are not from guns. If someone doesn't have a gun, they will stab with a knife and kill someone. Taking away guns would not stop the murder problem. This is a social problem! If someone wants to kill someone, they will find a way to do it, unless they are in Canada. What do Canadians do? They express their anger verbally. They don't think of using a gun OR a knife in a fight, and try to solve the situation rationally. If all else fails, yes, there could be a fight or even murder, but less likely than Mexico, where a crowd of people could watch you get stabbed and do nothing to stop it. America is fairly civilized. Guns are not the problem, morality and rationality are the problem.
at 12:42 on August 13th, 2009
Do you honestly think the US deserves to be compared to Jamaica, Columbia, Mexico? I would be embarrassed to even suggest that the US should be somehow compared to such lawless, currupt countries. If that is your standard then you have already given up the battle. I do not understand why the American people spend so much time on gay marriage and putting pot smokers in jail but do not seem to focus as much energy on the elephant in the room. Gun crimes. Gays and pot smokers don't generally kill innocent people. Where are the priorities?

The, "Yeah, but . . . . but . . . but . . . if I did it . . . mommy would spank ME . . ." substiture for discourse is tiresome. The idea that somehow one can point to an example of someone elses behavior to negate a possible problem is ludicrous. Perhaps, it could serve as an example of the widespread nature of the problem and echo similiar concerns.
However, much of what passes for discourse these days is simply from the If I Said/Did That I Would be Spanked and You Weren't School of Public Speechifying.
To be honest, life isn't fair. Some people get caught. Some people don't. Some people stick out. Some don't.
If you don't see a problem, it's far more interesting to find out why.

Good to see you back, Dunkelberg! Hope you stick around for awhile.

Good for that guy for exercising his 2nd amendement right!
There comes a time when peaceful protest becomes impossible. For those who have been paying attention, that time is upon us. The voice of the citizens mean absolutely nothing to our totalitarian gov't and the military/medical/industrial complex. "Free speech zones" and the like have curtailed the effectiveness of protesting and paranoia and greed have distanced gov't from the citizens. I hope people don't lay down and accept the trampling of their liberties.
