Amanda Knox: "My rights were respected"
Amanda Knox, the 22 year old Seattle resident and student of the University of Washington, jailed in Perugia, Italy, for the murder of her British room mate, has told an American official that she has great faith in Italian law, believes her rights were respected, and feels there is only one path for her to follow to freedom: The Italian appeals process.
All of this is in marked contrast with Knox's father, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, and Senator Maria Cantwell (WA-D) , who all complain that Knox received no justice, and that her arrest and trial were a travesty. The UK Times online runs this article, "Should Knox's trial have even gone to court?"
ROME — Amanda Knox, the American convicted of murdering her British housemate in Italy two years ago, feels her "rights were respected" in the trial, a leading Italian daily reported Wednesday."My rights were respected, I believe so," Knox told a lawmaker visiting her in prison just days after the verdict was announced early Saturday, the Corriere della Sera reported.
"The trial was carried out correctly," she told Walter Verini of the centre-left Democratic Party after a diplomatic furore sparked by a senator from Knox's home state of Washington, who charged that Italy's judicial system is "flawed."
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stepped into the fray on Sunday, saying in a television interview that she would meet with Senator Maria Cantwell "or anyone who has a concern" over Knox's trial and conviction.
Clinton's spokesman said the next day that the US government had no "indications... that Italian law was not followed."
Knox, 22, was convicted last week by two judges and six Italian jurors in Perugia, central Italy, of murdering British exchange student Meredith Kercher in the cottage the two young women shared in the centuries-old university town.
She was sentenced to 26 years in jail, while co-defendant Raffaele Sollecito, her boyfriend at the time of the murder, received a sentence of 25 years.
Knox told Verini: "I still have faith in Italian justice. I have a huge desire to be free but there is only one path I have chosen for leaving here, and that is the appeal that my lawyers are preparing."
The native of Seattle, Washington, who has already spent two years behind bars, chose her words carefully, like a lawyer or a diplomat, the report said.
"I thought I would be home for Christmas, but instead I have to wait," she said.
Prosecutors presented DNA and other forensic evidence against Knox, Sollecito and a third person, Rudy Guede of Ivory Coast, who was convicted separately after opting for a "fast-track" trial in exchange for clemency.
The prosecution alleged that the three young people were high on drugs when they tried to engage Kercher, 21, in a sex game that turned violent, leaving her dead with stab wounds to the neck.

The only trouble is, her father, mother, sister, and the Senator from WA, are all saying what a dreadful fiasco and travesty it all is. Amanda is making them look bad, boo hooo......

Maybe they should have talked to her before they started racing cane. I am sure that her and her lawyers can.t be too happy about the negative press coverage in the Italian media. So smk I guess the question is, who is making who look bad? I can see where Amanda and her legal team are coming from. Hillary Clinton, in my opinion, conducted herself very professional when she said that Amanda would be given the consular assistance given any American.

My 'umble opinion, from afar (not as far as the cowboy - he's waaaay out there ; ) - she may feel that she did receive a fair trial, may be being diplomatic - hoping to better her image by coming across as rational and reasonable. Has to look better than calling names and acting the spoiled child.
Her folks are talking with the broken heart and anger that is natural. They obviously, love her, and want to protect her. Got no issue with that....tho some of their words might be just a tad counterproductive.

Yes, I suppose you are right: Amanda's legal team and Hilary Clinton are trying to give the Italian system its due credit; and work within it to get things sorted out---while Senator Cantwell and Amanda's family seem very emotional, outraged, angry, etc., which is not really going to work for Amanda in the long run. I assume she is speaking to them, and telling them she would prefer that they respect what she is doing.......thanks, Pocc.

You're welcome smk.

Yes, HA, I also agree: I am just wondering what Senator Cantwell will now say, as she really went out on a limb and denounced the Italians. But I am sure Amanda will tell all of them that she now prefers to work within the Italian system. They will have to respect her wishes.....

Senator Cantwell should stay out of it. The State Department is responsible for this, not a Senator. Amanda will have consular support, as she should have.

uhhh.... how many 'sex games' include stab wounds to the neck?

That.s a new one to me too. I guess I've been shielded:)

Right, Rene, the crime itself was horrible. But we do not know that Amanda actually did any of it, was even present, or that there was even a sex game at all. This is all Mignini's conjecture. Recall, a man was sentenced to 30 years for the break-in and rape; he never mentioned Amanda or Raffaele until it was in the press. He was known to do break-ins. This is not clear, Amanda's guilt.
