Amazon - Guilt won´t save it

Every time we hear something about the Amazon rain forest devastation we feel kind of guilt for that piece of furniture we have at home, or maybe even for the whole home itself: for example Brazil export specially treated wood to European countries for the construction of houses.

But there is no reason for guilt. No, all you got to do is guaranty all your furniture pieces, home, boat, you name it... was made from certified wood. That is it! Journalist Cornell Evers told me, while in Manaus last week, that that is not enough, "it is also important to know what kind of certification we are talking about", he said. I agreed.

Some facts

About 58% of the Brazilian territory is the in Amazon region, more than 25 million Brazilians alone live in this area so it is even insane to think or expect it is not going to be explored. It must be, only it needs to be explored in a sustainable way! This reality is not only true for Brazil. You see, many of the other countries in the Amazon region are entirely, 100%, inside the Amazon, countries like: Peru, French Guiana and so on.

Acre - extreme west of Brazil

While still visiting FIAM 2009 I met Mr. Cesar Dotto, Acre's State Secretary of Development, Science and Technology, he granted me an interview about a new route from the extreme west of Brazil to the Pacific Ocean and Acre's sustainable development project. This highway means development to the area and Acre wants to see it happens in an appropriated way.

Next time you buy a beautiful piece of furniture it may indeed be from Acre.
