America has a Brand New Boogie Man,… The Muslim Brotherhood
Take a good look America this is the next thing on list that you are suppose to be terrified of. If the pundits over at Fox News have anything to say about it we will be gearing up for a brand new war, and this one will be a war of religion. Already some of the main stream media is putting this symbol in your face and exaggerating the truth, so you live in fear. From Bill O'Riley asking the president if we have anything to fear from the organization, (with the implication that we do) To Glen Beck's fact ignoring fear mongering, Fox News is in the forefront of this ongoing diatribe of half truths and out of context information.
The Muslim Brotherhood is a politically motivated organization. They have in fact been rumored to use questionable tactics to gain power in the past (1959 assassination attempt was the last) and to be sure there are some factions within the organization that could be classified as radical. Just the same as there are in almost every faith-based or political organization. But there have been facts about The Muslim Brotherhood that have been omitted through ignorance or on purpose, in an attempt to discredit a legitimate political organization.
The Muslim Brotherhood is the world's most influential Islamist movement. The Brotherhood has 88 seats in parliament, compared to the 34 politicians representing all other non-National Democratic Party members. This would seem that they are popular enough to be voted into office in regional elections in a large number. In fact they are so popular among the people of Egypt that the Egyptian Movement for Change, or Kifaya, a grassroots coalition opposed Hosni Mubarak’s presidency, which became a Western media darling during the 2005 election, relied heavily on the Brotherhood to put thousands of supporters into the streets.
According to Reuters News Agency: "The Muslim Brotherhood... are not seeking personal gains, so they announce they will not run for the presidency and will not seek to get a majority in the parliament”.
Yet conspiracy theories about on the Fox network that The Brotherhood orchestrated the entire protest that ousted the U.S. backed Hosni Mubarak in an attempt to consolidate power for themselves. Let us not forget that the United States Government openly called Mubarak an “ally in the region” even though it was widely reported that the election process was extremely corrupt under his rule. Dick Cheney went so far as to call Mubarak a “friend” It seems that the US government was more concerned about using Egypt as a staging point for operations in the region, than they were about the blatant violations of civil rights that were taking place while Mubarak was president.
In another article by Reuters Published NOV 28, 2010, a 22-year-old woman Amira Antar, voting for the first time in a parliamentary poll, in the last elections, explained what happened to her when she went to cast her vote at a polling station. After she made her choice, the polling station supervisor unfolded Antar’s ballot, ticked the candidate of President Hosni Mubarak’s ruling party and put her now spoiled paper in the box. “I was standing at the door and I saw what he did and honestly my heart broke. I don’t know what to do or who to complain to. I don’t think I’m going to vote again,” The young lady was voting for a candidate from The Muslim Brotherhood.
The Brotherhood has been involved in the Mid-East political spectrum since 1928. They have made progress in areas that are of importance to those that live in the region. They have been instrumental in mobilizing politicians to oppose the renewal of socially oppressive emergency laws (similar to the War Powers and Patriot acts here in the U.S.) in place since the assassination of Anwar al-Sadat and vowing to publish the names of those who voted in favor of them. They spearheaded the protesting and calling for a no-confidence vote against Mahmoud Abu al-Layl, the justice minister many held responsible for allowing fraud in the 2005 vote; and raising awareness about and criticising the government's response to the H5N1 or "bird flu" virus.
Perhaps the most important aspect that seems to have been overlooked by news media outlets that claim to be “fair and balanced” is the reality that the people who are most affected by The Muslim Brotherhood and their political agenda seem to want them as a choice on their voting ballots. Do we really believe that it is in any way our business what a sovereign nation; it’s intelligent, cultured and obviously passionate people, want as far as their government is concerned?
The idea of The Muslim Brotherhood being a threat to the people of the United States is completely unfounded. They have demonstrated that they do not like the US meddling in the region but with over 1 million dead Iraqi citizens and Afghanistan still in ruins, a reasonable person could hardly blame them.
