Reports from Jamaica says that an American airlines plane crashed in Jamaica, but the casuality figure are not yet disclosed.

WASHINGTON: An American Airlines plane crashed and broke in two after landing at Kingston International Airport in Jamaica on Tuesday night, Fox

News said quoting local reports.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Authority had no immediate comment.

An American Airlines spokesman says a flight from Miami overshot the runway in Kingston, Jamaica, but came to a safe stop. He says there are no immediate reports of injuries or fatalities.

Charley Wilson says all passengers are off Flight 331. It took off from Miami International Airport Tuesday at 8:52 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive at Norman Manley International Airport at 10:27 p.m.

Wilson says it was almost a full flight. He says normally a flight carries 140 passengers plus the crew.

Kingston Policeman O'Neil Hinds at police headquarters says officers at the scene report the plane ran off the end of the runway.

He says people were taken to hospital. He didn't know how many or anything about injuries. He says the plane was damaged but did not break apart.

KINGSTON — An American Airlines jet overshot the runway at a Jamaican airport and ended up in a mangled mess near a beach, but all 154 passengers and crew survived with just 40 mainly minor injuries, officials said.

Flight AA 331 from Miami arrived in heavy rain at Kingston airport late Tuesday and passengers had just applauded what appeared to be a safe landing, reports said.

But the Boeing 737 jet ploughed through the perimeter fence at Norman Manley International Airport, skidded across a road and ended up on a beachfront. The airport was immediately closed and all other flights diverted.

Information Minister Daryl Vaz told the Jamaica Observer newspaper that most of the 40 injured passengers were taken to Kingston Public Hospital and that there were no reports of fatalities.

"Preliminary reports indicate there are no serious injuries," American Airlines spokesman Tim Smith said in a recorded statement.

The flight had originated at Washington's Reagan National Airport and had stopped at Miami, the airline told AFP.

The Boeing 737 aircraft was badly damaged in the crash just after 10:00pm (0300 GMT Wednesday).

Heavy wind will have played a major factor in the crash. We had this front pass over Honduras over the weekend with strong seas, winds and rain observed.

This front has gained in strength over the last 48 hours. With this considered, passengers must have had a Hell Ride.

The size of the storm, its rapid strengthening and Jamaica's relatively remote location in the Central Caribbean, would have left little options for the pilots or ground crew but to attempt this sucessful crash landing.

Merry Christmas <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Jamaica!!
