In Godfather III, when Michael Corleone's daughter gets killed, you can see it destroy him. Bin-Laden is going through something like that over his son right now.
This case, this new "American Taliban" is just another individual who failed to absorb what he should have/could have absorbed about basic morality and spirituality from his Roman Catholic background or from his exposure to our practices in human rights.
But, there is not enough real spirit in these institutions today, speaking as someone who went to Catholic school and a Quaker school.
For me, this goes on because young men have no real, or few real channels for their enormous energies. This challenge of the Jihad takes care of the spiritual stuff and the need to feel that they are involved with all that warrior energy in something bigger than themselves.
The consumer society of malls and MTV doesn't offer that. Consumer society offers the opposite of it.
I was watching "Fight Club" last night, and it is a great depiction of the problem. Jihad is "Fight Club" Muslim-style.
