After US Marines landed at Guantanamo Bay Cuba on June 10th 1898, during the Spanish-American war, Republican candidate in the 1900 election for president of the United States, William McKinley, when asked about when the troops could come home from Cuba, is rumored to have scoffed at the idea and said "we should plan on having troops in Cuba for a hundred years." McKinley's campaign may have charecterized Democratic candidate William Jennings Bryan, as being "soft of terror" for not supporting the war after the public was told by the Hearst newspapers that the USS Maine was purposefully blown up by "terrorists". Though this was never proven, McKinley won and US troops are still in Cuba. There are no known sources to substantiate the rumors in this article.
