Fifty-eight percent of Americans surveyed Wednesday and Thursday night say Barack Obama denounced Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. for political convenience, according to a Rasmussen Reports™ report released this morning.

The results come only days after the junior senator and Democrat presidential candidate from Illinois made statements in another apparent attempt to distance himself from Reverend Wright, his pastor for more than 20 years at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.

Only 33 percent of voters believe Obama was surprised by the views Wright expressed at Monday’s press conference, the survey results showed. Fifty-two percent say Obama was not surprised.
