Tesoro Explosion: Tesoro's Anacortes Refinery Fire on April 2nd Left 4 Dead and 4 Injured

In the early hours of Friday April 2nd, an explosion rocked the Anacortes Refinery in Washington state and has left four people dead and four injured. Tesoro Corp. Refinery is located about 70 miles north of Seattle and reports state that the blaze started when maintenance work was being done on the refinery.

According to the Associated Press the four employees that were injured are in critical condition in hospital. They have not been named but have been identified as two women aged 29 and 36, and two men aged 34 and 41. The four people that were killed have not been identified. 

Residents who live near the refinery said they felt the explosion then saw the flames:

"My house shook, big time," Lisa Wooding told KOMO-TV. "There were flames. First high, then low to the ground and broad."

It is not known exactly how the fire started and the extent of the damage has not been determined. The rest of the employees have been accounted for, there are 300 in total, and some parts of the refinery are still able to operate after the fire.

The Anacortes Refinery makes petroleum products and can refine about 130,000 barrels of crude oil every day. It is considered the 59th biggest refinery in the United States.
