ANARCHY-AN EMERGING NEW FORM OF GOVT?

There are pockets of Afaghanistan and Pakistan where national govts of these two countries have no influence at all.

The only authority that is tenable is exercised by tribal chiefs and any national govts influence must be weaved thro the local tribal authority to have any meaningful effect in these areas.

Incidentally, the same thing is also true in Hamas controlled areas of Palestine.

Formal govts are always at a loss when it comes to negotiations that involve direct contact with existing authorities in these areas as there is a lack of defined front to engage these amorphous forms of authority.

The same thing also happens near the Iraq/Turkey border with the Kurds.

Closer home here in KENYA,Somalia has also done without a formal govt since 1991 when the then bad govt of Mohammed Siad Barre was kicked out of power.

They seemed to be doing well with occasional sporadic clan fights that are usually as a result of carving out niches of authority for particular war lords.

When such misunderstandings are finally solved, life goes back to normal and anarchy reigns where individuals decide what to do with their life as well as lives of others whenever it is expedient to them.

All these pockets of anarchy however have one thing in common;they are constantly marked as the hot spots of conflict in the wider World.

But against all odds, they also remain the same way even after whatever interventionist action the world decides to take on them!

Kashmir has resisted action from India and Pakistan for a long time with each trying to pull it to its side.

These anarchist regimes try as much as posible to withdraw from the rest of the World and there is always relative calm within them untill something like the Pirate escapades bring them out to light.
They also serve as refuge for fugitives running away from taking responsibility for callous deeds done to the rest of the World.

Which leads to the 150 million USD question;is ANARCHY a new form of GOVT being propagated by FUGITIVES as their REFUGE or can the rest of the WORLD actually do without any FORMAL govt?

When the Pirates escapades are the only news that draw attention to the SOMALI crisis and the World seems to have forgotten that SOMALIA exists without any formal govt, then its time to ask ourselves whether anarchy is actually an alternative to bad govts like the one that was kicked out in Somalia in 1991.

Food for thought!

. . . if you can live on the crumbs that fall off the edge of the table then you don't need a government.  If you want a seat at the table then you need a government--somebody who can sign for the whole.  It's that simple.

PROFARMS, thank you for this Opinion piece. If you haven't already, you might want to read 'Nobody Is Watching', America's hidden war in Somalia'. Very interesting!

Thank you Rhoda and Fairbanks for your thought provoking comments.

This article is actually meant to draw such reaction and help us understand why the rest of the World is so complacent about the Somalia situation.

Is it a conspiracy to make Somalia a classic study case of how anarchy would work on a modern world?

Unfortunately I missed the article on Americas hidden war on Somalia when I accessed Baltimore post on the link given by Rhoda.

I'd really like to read this article.

Thanks to you all and let's have more thoughts on this subject.

You are very welcome, PROFARMS. The article is available at the link -- I don't know why you had difficulty accessing it. Please try again. The article may shed some light on why 'Nobody Is Watching' Somalia. There are also links to related stories on the page as well.

Thanks Rhoda. I've finally managed to read thro the article you have on the link.

I honestly don't know what to make of it. Though some covert action is going on shrouded in some form of cover,I still think that there should be wider concerted effort that aims at mobilizing somalis to form a strong central GOVT.

The small man,as Fairbanks has put it,is not even able to access the crumbs at the warlords table.

When I see these poor suffering lot lot turn up at our border only to be driven back to their festering country since they are considered a security risk inside our country,my heart bleeds for them.

I think the warlords are using the general SOMALI populace as a hostage against a resolved action on them by the world.

They are using every tactic to keep out the rest of the World from accessing the true sufferring situation in Somalia.

My heart goes out to this suffering lot.
