Andhra Pradesh- Politicians making farce of democracy
Politicians are putting the system of democracy to shame by appearing to bend to the popular will which is against the policies of political parties making them appear to be doing a sacrifice for the public cause but with an intention to stick to the positions and power at any cost.
All the major political parties of Andhra Pradesh as well as India agreed in principle and pledged support for the formation of separate state for Telangana State. While the Union government went on postponing the process for the fear of many demands for new states, the leading light of recent Telangana State movement KCR forced the Union Government into taking a decision in favor of separate state. Before acceding to the long pending demand for the creation of separate state, the union government asked the views of all political parties and together all the parties pledged to support formation of separate state. The Union Government then while agreeing in principle to start the process, has asked the State Government to introduce suitable resolution in the State Assembly.
The announcement of the Union Government led to a political drama, worst of its kind in any democracy.
Instead of toeing to the party lines, the members of assembly irrespective of party affiliation started resigning bowing to the popular will of those areas who wanted continuation of integrated state of AP.
The resignation letters sent to the Speaker were so framed that the speaker cannot accept them. They gained the popular sympathy as though they championed the cause of public, yet they have no intentions to make their resignations effective. They continue to be members of the assembly and enjoy all the privileges yet they shun the duty of attending the assembly session to discuss the vexed issue and arrive at a conclusion best for the people of all the regions. The Members of Parliament too played the same trick and submitted their resignations to the party high command only with a view to retain public sympathy without any intention to sacrifice their positions of power. The Ministers in the Cabinet too submitted resignations not to the chief minister but to the congress high command without giving a chance to the chief minister to forward their resignations to the governor for his acceptance. Hence the ministers continue to enjoy all the power and privileges without any responsibility whatsoever which is nothing but a political drama. Even the opposition parties too did the same trick and submitted their resignations or format not constitutionally valid and continue to enjoy their privileges.
Those who appear to have resigned but have no intention to resign succeeded in stalling the government machinery, administration and law and order and causing stress and tension to the general public. They continue to enjoy all the privileges without responsibility as the public servants makes democracy a mockery. It is unfortunate that Andhra Pradesh has such leaders who tarnish the image of the party system and democratic values.
These politicians are doing a great disservice to the cause of democracy and will sure get a drubbing when the public are offered a chance to show their rage in the elections.
