Today in history, the Space shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after liftoff from Cape Canaveral, Florida, killing all seven astronauts aboard, including schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe, the first member of the Teacher in Space Project.
A commission that later investigated the explosion said it was caused by an escape of gases from a joint on a solid booster rocket. It urged strict new standards to ensure flight safety.
Please take a moment to remember those killed in the explosion of January 28, 1986: flight commander Francis R. "Dick" Scobee, pilot Michael J. Smith, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Judith A. Resnick, Gregory Jarvis, and Christa McAuliffe.
