As was expected, protesters are mounting demonstrations ahead of the G20 summit in Pittsburgh, USA, where leaders of the 19 largest national economies will amass September 24-25 to focus on resolving the global economic crisis and engaging in "socially responsible globalisation." The protesters include representatives from labour, socialist, environmentalist and anti-globalist movements. Protesters are largely demanding more transparency about the actions that G20 is undertaking to combat economic and environmental problems.

Meanwhile, serious differences exist between the G20 leaders gathering in Pittsburgh this week. The US is expected to clash with the European Union over the measures taken to counter-act the global financial crisis. The Pittsburgh Summit is very much a follow-up to the actions already taken after the April G20 meeting in London, UK.

US President Barack Obama has said the summit in Pittsburgh on Thursday and Friday is an opportunity for a "check-up" on initiatives to counter the financial crisis.

The police presence in Pittsburgh is considerable, counting in the thousands. There have been allegations that demonstrators will not be provided with protest permits. There are also reports of the harassment of protesters by the police. Protests are expected to be peaceful though.

The complaint, which was filed in a Pennsylvania district court, accuses the police department and several individual officers of harassing anti-G20 activists in a bid to discourage them from taking part in protests on Thursday and Friday, when world leaders are due to hold talks in this once rough-and-tumble US steel town.
A total of 27 roads will be closed during the summit when the transportation safety plan goes into effect at 12:01 a.m. Thursday. It will end on Friday after authorities have determined dignitaries have left.

I feel sorry for the people of Pittsburgh! Isn't there a deserted island somewhere that the movers and shakers can shake up? At least then, they wouldn't cause traffic jams and interfere with people's daily routines (and lives).

Yeah, I heard on the radio that even schools will be closed.  On a lesser note, but good for business, a famous Pittsburgh sandwich shop is expecting twice as much business (specifically, the place where they put the fries and the coleslaw in the sandwich).

Rory,

But if they did that, there would be no one to protest.

Well, I feel sorry for all the people who have died or last tribal lands , thanks to the neolibcon policies of the G-20.   This generation is pathetic

caj 1: Right O! Put the fries and the coleslaw in the sandwich! What's becoming of America anyway when a bunch of swinging Viagra induced schlongs (of the "world leader" variety) that haven't got a clue about the real world invade a nice place like Pittsburgh? JEEZ!

Funny...I hope they visit the Polish sausage shops, the Hill district, and Walnut Street!

Haven't they already done enough to the poor Polish people? LOL!

And those protesters are more conservative than Conservatives! Go figure!

PS, conservatives are not neo-conservatives/neo-liberals - there is a big difference.
