Apotemnophilia, Gerontosexuality: Hastings on hate crimes

Congressman Alcee Hastings today voiced his support for the Local Law Enforcement Hate Prevention Act of 2009 saying that this was a positive move to expand federal law that includes protections for crimes that are specifically targeted at individuals due to their gender, a disability, or sexual orientation.

Rep. Hastings had the unfortunate task however, of listing what this proposed amendment was not going to cover, and the Congressman looked a little flustered delivering this part of his speech:

Apotemnophilia, Coprophilia, frotteurism, Klismaphilia, and Gerontosexuality among others.

The current hate crimes bill covers acts based on race, colour, national origin and religion, but it says nothing about gender or sexual orientation for example.

"While this legislation may not rid us of the intolerance and prejudices that continues to taint our society, it will provide an added deterrent to those for whom these feelings manifest themselves into acts of violence. They will be fully aware that, should they commit a hate crime, there will be no lenience and they will not slip through the cracks of the American legal system," said Hastings.

This new legislation will provide assistance to the state and law enforcement to investigate crimes of a more gender or sexual nature.
It also removes the clause that a hate crime can only be prosecuted if the victim is currently engaged in a federally protected activity, like voting.

H.R. 1913 is also known as the Matthew Shepard Act, in memory of the 21-year old University of Wyoming student who was brutally tortured and murdered in 1998 because he was gay. The legislation has the support of 31 state Attorneys General and over 300 law enforcement civil rights, education, religious, and civic organizations.

However, I'm sure you're wondering what it won't include, so here are some definitions.

Apotemnophilia - when someone has a sexual interest in being or being looked at by an amputee.

Coprophilia - the act of deriving pleasure from feces.

Frotteurism - the act of rubbing up against someone to obtain sexual pleasure without their consent.

Klismaphilia- obtaining pleasure from enemas.

Gerontosexuality- a young or middle aged adult who has a sexual attraction to someone who is 65 years old or older.
