Apple computers apple icon banned in Russia because of religion?
Apple Computers is one of the most famous corporations in the world. Unfortunately they have had employed contractors who make their products, who employ sweatshop conditions. Such as in China. Well in Russia the Russian Orthodox Church, which has become a de facto arm of the Russian government and the adminstration of President Putin, wants Apple to change its' logo from its' iconic apple with a bite, to a Christian cross. They might also get their way on it too.
As I stated previously, the Russian government and this powerful church, have sewn closer ties. Putin's government came down hard on the all-female band Pussy Riot after their protest at one of the church's cathedrals, and three members of the band got two years in prison in a penal colony, after something that would be just disorderly conduct in the U.S. So, in Russia there is strong consideration of the creation of blasphemy laws. These kind of laws were once quite common in the West, when atheists activists such as me were imprisoned for this made up crime.
The apple by Apple Computers is offensive to some Russian Orthodox believers (along with probably some other Christians in the world) because the apple is the symbol they use for the fruit eaten in the mythical Garden of Eden. Of course, there was no apple mentioned in the story, just a fruit. So, that means the apple character in those Fruit of the Loom commercials must be banned also. By the way, that company has also engaged in sweatshop practices in the making of their products. What is with companies with apples in their slogans and sweatshops, anyway?
The power of the religious right-wing be it in Alabama or Russia or Turkey, needs to be countered at all times.
