No, this is not an episode of The Benny Hill Show. One cannot make this stuff up.

An Arab ambassador to Dubai had only seen his new bride's face as he lifted her veil to kiss her. That was when he discovered that the bride's mother had tricked him, by sending him pictures of the bride's sister. Since the woman had only worn a niqab (the Islamic veil) the few times they met, he had no idea what she really looked like.

According to a wedding guest, "the bride had a nice personality, but there was a good reason why she was hiding her looks behind a veil." The groom apparently left immediately, and went from the ceremony to a court to annul the marriage.

In addition to the annulment, he also demanded he be refunded over £100,000 he had paid for the wedding itself. He was denied.

Damn. I mean...damn. I don't mean to be rude or cold or anything, but can't say I blame him. I know people like to say "looks aren't everything"...but those people are ugly themselves (drum-fill). Unfortunately, looks are very important, where ever you go. And let's face it, the man was lied to. If her parents were sending him and his family pictures of someone COMPLETELY different, that is NOT cool.

I have to admit that I know very little about Arab culture, but you mean to tell me that there was NO WAY that he could confirm this woman's looks in person?! Anyone who has ever met someone via online dating may have run into a similar situation like this. I remember meeting someone several years ago off of one of the popular dating sites. She only had one picture up, and it was a cute one. And when I met her, she looked like her picture...but the picture had been taken from an atypical angle-- her "best side". At the risk of being rude, all the other sides weren't that hot(!). That's a common story of online dating-- people sending pictures that either aren't them, or they'll send a 5-10 year old picture, or they have one picture they look good in because they're all dressed up and made up. You think you're dating one of the pretty "Lee" sisters, but it turns out to be "Ug" (badum-bum-- get it?!).

Oh well. I hope these people eventually find happiness. They both seem to be successful in their fields, but when it comes to love...not so much. Such is life...
