Archaic Laws: French Women Still Not Allowed To Wear Pants By Law

A law banning women from wearing pants is still in effect in Paris, France. The law dates back to the 19th century, but is hardly ever enforced anymore. The law states that women in Paris are not allowed to wear trousers in general, but a woman who does want to wear pants "must present herself to Paris's main police station to obtain authorization." The law does allow women to wear pants when horse-riding or biking, however. The French government was looking to repeal the law, but it seems that simply ignoring it might be easier for the city. How this law could still be in effect in the most fashion-conscientious city in the world is a bit of a mystery.

The latest attempt to remove the outmoded rule was in 2003, when a Right-wing MP from President Nicolas Sarkozy's UMP party wrote to the minister in charge of gender equality. The minister's response was: "Disuse is sometimes more efficient than (state) intervention in adapting the law to changing mores."

Here is a list of other archaic laws out there:

  • Shopping on Sundays is still not allowed in certain provinces in Canada and regions of England.
  • A recent EU ruling that banned crucifixes from state-run schools in Italy will be appealed by the country's officials.
  • In the U.K., it is still illegal to make personal-use copies of legally purchased CDs and DVDs. Also, there is still a law in Britain which calls for life imprisonment for anyone advocating the abolition of the monarchy.
  • The state of Hawaii still does not allow any billboard signs. While in Maine, skydiving is considered a crime. And, believe it or not, a woman is still not allowed to cut her hair without her husband's permission in Michigan.

Do you think outdated laws should be changed or allowed to stand?

YankeeJim, this is a baiting comment and is offensive to many people on this site.

Sputnic, that said, please refrain from personal attacks.

What about the Catholic priests? (I did see the humor in your comment.) Some people are just too sensitive.

Ha, ha ha.. In this great country I now live in all laws are regularly broken such as wearing helmets, long trousers, long sleeve shirts and leather shoes when driving a motor bike. I admit to breaking this law other than wearing the helmet.

Canada has some great laws in differing area's such as not eating food on the front lawn. UK has hundreds of by laws that are just ignored.

Have you ever participated in football or baseball pool at work?  Consider this, although a bill was introduced there to make small sports pools legal.  Is it legal in your state?

Two people were arrested and prosecuted a little more than a year ago. Margaret Hamblin, 73, and Cari Gardner, 39, both of Wildomar,  were charged with operating a football pool at the Wildomar Elks Lodge. Hamblin and Gardner pleaded guilty and were fined $130 each. Later, those guilty pleas dismissed.

I love reading things like this. Do you know that it's illegal to die in the House of Commons? Wonder what the sentence is...

That is the sentence.

No appeals, either.

In New Mexico:
Females are strictly forbidden to appear unshaven in public.
The real reason politicians with beards don't do well, imho

In Kentucky:     By law, anyone who has been drinking is "sober" until he or she "cannot hold onto the ground."
Not sure if that one is considered archaic in Kentucky.

In Florida:  Men may not be seen publicly in any kind of strapless gown.                That ran into problems  with the advent of National Transgender Day
