Archeologists have unearthed an ancient 19-meter-tall statue of the Buddha accompanied by artifacts in central Afghanistan. The giant Buddha is reclining and dates to the third century of the Christian era. It was discovered near the ruins of the world-famous Bamiyan Buddhas that were destroyed by the Taliban seven years ago. Local officials have announced that the statue has been badly damaged. Particular areas, such as the neck and the right hand, are in good condition. Archeologists have unearthed 89 items such as coins and ceramics in addition to the statue. Officials have announced it is possible the statue will be publicly displayed next year. The latest find gives hope to archeologists searching for a statue of 300 meters in Bamiyan, once a thriving center of Buddhism, as written about by a Chinese pilgrim centuries ago. NAT/JG/BGH.
