Are the terrorists winning?
I sat at the gas station for an hour today, before taking the pic of the activity. I saw that most of the time the pumps were all active. This is not to say people were filling up completely, but still business was brisk. Someone on CNN's iReports asked me if I saw any motor homes towing boats or cars filling up. No, I didn't at that station, however I DID see at least a dozen of them running around town, some with boats behind them, some with cars and most without anything in tow.
I can't swear if it's just out of necessity or whether it's people saying the prices are not going to spoil their holiday fun, but all the gas stations in town are doing good business. Also the fire department had a fund raiser going at the same intersection and people were donating right and left, so it IS evidence that despite high prices not just in the stores and at the pumps, people still have disposable income to share. I even had one person give me $20 so I could buy some gas. Granted it only got me 3.6 gallons, but it'll last me for awhile.

I think people are just about managing to deal with the prices now, but if they get any higher, there's going to be major problems. I saw a report about it on CNN and many people were saying that the high prices are not going to deter them from enjoying some time away this weekend, but that they either were not going as far as they wanted to, or were not taking their trailers with them. However, that was just a small number of people so who knows.

Americans are a very resourceful people. The price of oil, which is not within their control, will not cause the kind of economic damage that people fear. In fact it could be a great thing in the medium to long run. With oil predicted to stay at these prices or go higher the worldwide market for alternatives is big and will soon be HUGE. That is one of the big strengths of the American economy - innovation. US universities, companies and investors should be focusing on becoming the world leader in alternative fuel technologies. Some time in the near future oil alternatives will be a bigger market than oil and that is a boat you do not want to miss.
Even in the short run just look at other countries and how they manage. Canadians pay $1.00 more per gallon and have for years. No problem with the Canadian economy. The northern Europeans pay $2.00 - $4.00 more per gallon and their economies steam right ahead. Some adjustments will be necessary, however. More use of alternatives will be an absolute must. Electric vehicles are just about ready for commercial debut while clean diesel (not that horribly polluting Pensylvania stuff), which is far more efficient, will become more common. As long as the US government encourages alternatives and does not try to discourage them by artificially subsidizing gas through tax breaks and incentives to oil companies all will be fine. if the French can do it I am certain the Americans will do even better.

I don't think that people will give up driving (for most, there isn't much of an alternative, as so many cities in the US have really lame public transportation), but prices of just about everything in the grocery store will go up as shipping costs rise...

the terrorists ARE winning
and their names are George Bush, Dick Cheney, Karl Rove...
They started the gulf war, and Cheney's background with the energy Corps, and closed door meetings with them about US energy policy?@#$#
GWB is an oilman and him and his daddy have done LOTS of business with the Saudis, including the Bin Laden Family...
nothing suspicious here ???
The oil companies are charging more because they CAN.
before, if they raised the $ of oil too much we would not drive as much and buy less oil, but NOW, we are more dependent on it, and use more. Not to mention that China and India are using much more as well, so the Saudis are not as dependent on the US to buy it.
The Oil Co's realized that the US will still buy it at a raised price, we HAVE to...
They are feeling us out right now, to see at what point we will lower demand.
At some (CRITICAL) point though, it WILL seriously affect the US economy, and i mean MUCH more than it is doing now.
People will not be able to drive to work. Food, and almost any goods that need to be trucked in (almost everything) will go up seriously in price
There will be a critical breaking point, (at about %30 of job loss), where large corps will have to shut their doors.
After this, there will be pandemonium, riots in the streets, no food for the masses, people wont be able to afford to live, soup lines reminiscent of the great depression, but MUCH worse...
Dont think this cant happen, we are VERY dependent on OIL, everything made of plastic, everything that has to do with transportation, damn near EVERYTHING !@

Yes, the terrorist are winning. Just look at the changing behavior that we have to put up with. The terrorist want to change our behavior. Look what they have already done we have this stupid tried to light his shoe on a plane, now everyone who flies must now remove their shoes. Question; has TSA found any more explosive shoes? Did they, TSA, catch this person with the explosive shoe? I seem to remember it was the passengers that caught him. Next, the British foiled a plot to use liquid explosives on board planes headed for the United States. Now we can no longer carry on shampoo or conditioner or toothpaste except in little portions. Tell, me, has TSA found any more of this liquid explosive of all the confiscated liquids the placed in those trash cans. Can I ask another question? Has, anyone, hi jacked an airline with nail clippers, why are they confiscated? Now they have a machine that can see under clothes, of course we have to take their word that the faces on these scans are blurred. But, it is just a matter of time before one of these images are going to show up on the internet. I just watched a program about things smuggled into prison one inmate tried a hand grenade. If the TSA ever finds out all passengers will have to under go a full body cavity search to get on a plane. I also saw a program that said they changed to uniforms of the TSA to help their self-esteem, what I see is an agency that is beginning to look like the Gestapo. This is very dangerous Somebody out there stop this madness. Some of the TSA agents exhibit the us against them attitude, YES THE TERRORIST ARE WINNING and we are helping them do so. Let me count the ways: (1) warrant-less wire taps
(2) suspects held for long periods without legal representation
(3) People tortured
We have no honor any more!
