Are we getting tired of the Conservative tricks and propaganda?
Like many of you I have been watching the parliamentary debacle every day! I get the impression that the Harper government will try any trick whatsoever to have him stay in power! He does not seem to get it that the only reason he was elected to govern was because Canadians were afraid of Stephane Dion. Dion came across as someone who was confused and also stubborn -- he didn't even listen to his own liberal party members when they told him that Canadians were not ready for a Carbon Tax at this time when the economy of Canada was starting to slide. He clung to his ideas and pursued it doggedly!
Harper on the other hand to full advantage of Dion's weaknesses and told Canadians that he was willing to work productively with all parties to make sure that Canada maintained their strong place among the G-20 nations. But as soon as he was faced with an upcoming non-confidence vote which was supposed to happen on Monday, Dec. 8th -- he ran to the Governor General to make sure she granted him his wish to close the Legislature for the next seven weeks. Not only did he know ahead of time that Constitutionally she would have to grant his wish, but he arrogantly started picking a fight with the Bloc, calling them separatists and the NDP, Socialists. Did he really think that Canadians would forget that he was very happy to accept their votes in 2000 and 2004 when it suited him. And that ahead of the last election he said that he was eager to work with all the parties and welcomed their input? Honestly, how dumb does he think Canadians are?
I for one think this will come back to bite him you know where! The coalition will indeed face a difficult time for a few weeks until Dion realizes he must step down for the benefit of the party and the upcoming 'new election'. But in one way or another, the coalition will survive, and Harper will have to eat his words!

The 3 Amigos Theory
Three things can happen when parliament resumes;
1) Harper works out a meaningful budget and regains the confidence of parliament,
2) Harper, regardless of what is proposed, is put to a confidence vote, loses, and the 3 Amigos rule our country until we get another election.
3)Harper requests and is granted a new election based on Canadian's unfounded fear of a coalition.
Given the reasons of Harper's success so far, I expect the third scenario. Harper has 7 weeks to build fear into Canadians minds about our ever so bleak future. He's been a magician of sorts in the past in how he has managed to tap into the minds of Joe Who and use what he learns against us. He knows we learn our politics on the TV and that most of what we watch is piped in from the US. His speech to the nation couldn't express this fact any better than it did.
I can only hope that there is still time for the opposition to open their eyes and see Mr. Harper for who he really is....A Reform Party Leader.
Maybe then we can have an election for a real leader.

"When you Canadians go to vote again, I want you to remember how helpful and obliging Prime Minister Harper has been to me and my administration in the past. The world would be a different place without his helping my efforts to spread democracy.
"So, when Canada next votes, think of me as you cast that ballot."

Well, the good news is that Bush is on his way out sooooon! At least in the U.S. it is clear who the President-elect is and the type of direction he will likely take on economics and foreign affairs. Here in Canada the situation looks very bleak! Even Jon Stewart joked about it on his regular show the other day! (*Can't say I blame him).
