Argentine opposition leader alleges graft by mike_yvr

The opposition in Argentina is making a case against former President Nestor Kirchner - husband of incumbent Head of State Cristina Fernandez - for corruption. The timing of this political action seems to coincide with the briefcase trial that took place in Miami just few days ago. Money was allegedly found in a suitcase brought to Argentina by a Venezuelan-American citizen, Guido Antonini, to fund the political campaign of Cristina Fernadez.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) - An Argentine opposition leader asked a court on Wednesday to order a corruption probe of former President Nestor Kirchner _ the husband of current President Cristina Fernandez.  Aides to Elisa Carrio entered a federal courthouse carrying boxes of documents she said would prove that Kirchner and two Cabinet ministers profited from government contracts and evaded taxes.  «They're a group of thugs and we're going to present the evidence to the judicial system,» Carrio said. Interior Minister Florencio Randazzo told Buenos Aires news agency Diarios y Noticias that Carrio's case shouldn't be taken seriously, saying it would hinder the advancement of democracy by bogging the country down in corruption allegations. A federal judge will examine the complaint, which could take months, and decide if there is enough evidence to order an official investigation, which could extend for years.
