The Arizona Immigration Law SB 1070 is Already Showing its Effect on the State, With Businesses Saying They Are Suffering

The effects of passing the Arizona Immigration Law SB 1070 is already being felt in the state with many Hispanic business owners saying their sales have declined and they fear they are now going to struggle to stay afloat.

Hector Manrique owns a taqueria in Phoenix, but as he tells CNN, he is now seeing signs of his business decline and at times when his restaurant would be fairly full, he only sees empty tables and no people in sight.

He also said that street traffic in this mostly Hispanic area of Phoenix is now lighter, and other business owners in the area are noticing the same.

I think they're afraid of being out on the streets knowing they're going to get pulled over by the sheriff," says Manrique, a Mexican-born U.S. citizen who has lived in Phoenix since the 1990s. "A lot of people told me they're afraid to go out even though the law's not fully passed.

It has not even been a week since the bill was signed in Arizona, but since then there have been protests and many speaking out against the bill, fearing it will only ignite other states to pass the same legislation. There has also been praise of the bill however.

Arizona is now fighting to keep the bill alive and if it passes all the next legal steps, it could go in to effect as early as August 2010.

Manrique said that he noticed a decline in population in his area last Friday when the bill was signed.

"The streets just went empty. Usually on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, we're packed. But this weekend was empty like I'd never seen it before,"

Jose Riva owns a bodega and although he says all his employees are in the United States legally, he is not sure how he is going to be able to continue to employ them as his custom continues to dip.

Ours is a culture that consumes a lot -- food, drinks, clothes, you name it," said Rivas, periodically stopping to greet or wave at a customer. "If no one's out shopping, how can I afford to employ my workers? They're all here legally. What happens to them?

Ernesto Tercero from Mexico owns a meat distribution company in Phoenix and he says that this is a slap in the face to the American dream. He said that he knows of people in America both legally and illegally who are now considering leaving the state.

They got people who've been here 20 years, they got kids, people who came when their kids were 3, 4 years old. Now they're 20 years old. They can't go back to Mexico. They've never even been to Mexico

The bill wants to find those who are in the country illegally however to temper the misuse of taxpayer dollars to fund health care and immigration, but opponents of the bill say this will only create a climate of fear and will allow racial profiling.

I am an American of Hispanic decent, SB 1070 will required an officer to make a judgment about my immigration status based on my ethnicity. My direct ancestors have lived in the SW United States for hundreds of years. I'm more AMERICAN than any of you BIGOTS!

The Biggots are the ones that are against the law.  I hope the rest of the states will follow Arizona's lead.  We that are here legally, who work hard and pay our taxes are tired of paying for the ones that are here ILLEGALLY.  They have never paid a dime into the system, they are getting free hand outs, they are driving wages down, etc.....

YES !   the bigots are the ones against the law....

You don't hear these numbers when professional athletes or movie stars protest Arizona.....Washington D. C. cannot understand that there is a problem. The following information IS compiled from Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Homeland Security reports: * 83% of warrants for murder in Phoenix are for illegal aliens.  * 40.1% of all inmates in Arizona detention centers are Mexican nationals  * 53% plus of all investigated burglaries reported in  Arizona  are perpetrated by illegal aliens. * 63% of cited/stopped drivers in Arizona have no license, no insurance and no registration for the vehicle. Of that 63%, 97% are illegal aliens * 380,000 plus “anchor babies” were born in the US to illegal alien parents in just one year, making 380,000 babies automatically US citizens.* 97.2% of all costs incurred from those births were paid by the American taxpayers And we haven't even touched food stamps, subsidized housing, medicare/medicaid costs, education costs (including special bilingual teachers and extra police to patrol the halls), traffic problems, etc., here.   What part of illegal do you not understand?

Noone ever said they are all bad. But let's put it logically. Not all Methamphetimine users are bad either. Bother are equally criminals none the less. They broke the law, willingly and with knowledge. For that, drug users get jailed. Illegal immigrants get health care and a job. No, illegals need to pay for their crimes like every other criminal, good people or not. It's not discrimination, just law. If I were to illegally pass into some countries, the punishment is death, or torture. Even mexico's illegal entry laws are pretty harsh. Think about this though, a crime is a crime.

dear amber mexicans work and pay taxes all thier life and never get anything, and have to work intill the last drop of life they have in them because they pay social security and the goverment and get nothing in return! My hispanic heritage has showed me how to work hard, WE do the jobs Americans won't! so we dont steal jobs or money, where just your excuse so Americans won't work hard!

"They don't pay a dime into the system"?????? What happens to the tax money that illegal immigrants can't file and claim because of their status when it comes to "Tax Time"? Who keeps all that money? Think about it.  Then "Uncle Sam" wants them to fill out the Census so their cities and counties get more financial assistant, assuring them that their immigration status will not be affected.  What a joke!

FYI for FunkySpaceMonkeyThe influx in payment of taxes began in earnest in 1996, when the IRS created nine-digit individual taxpayer identification numbers (ITINs),  It was designed to enable the IRS to track the tax returns of those who are ineligible for a Social Security number.  It is believed that most taxpayers who use ITINs are illegal immigrants although a small portion of legal residents also has them. Officially, the Social Security Administration estimates that about seventy five percent (75%) of illegal workers contribute to the overall solvency of Social Security and Medicare by paying taxes. In 2005 the agency estimates that on about $75 billion in wages from people who filed W2 forms with incorrect or mismatched data, about $9 billion in taxes was paid. This amount would include illegal immigrants using fake names and Social Security numbers. Although the influence on Social Security is considerable because most of the money received is never claimed by the illegal immigrant who pays into the system.  Instead of the money returning to the rightful owner, it is used to cover the deficit in retirement checks payable to legal workers.

Oh for gods' sake!!! Illegal immigrants are the ones that support the movement of it all. Just like anyone else, they are taxpayers, they pey their bills and etc to what a self sustainable person would do. And you come here saying that we don't put a single dime into the economy. If it wasn't for the taxes we perceived on paying, who would sustain your bounceable returning checks at the end of each year. Income taxes are an effect of such!!!! Along with helping the gvn't give those uncaple of working a compensation check each month. You need to inform yourself white girl. Plus, if you're in favor of the law, I would enjoy seeing your parents take the jobs that move the country. Grow some crops, and go pick some tomatoes to see if it's as easy as you think. And let's see if afterwards you say that they put a single dime into the economy. Aghhh, you make me sick!

CR

Amber, most of the people that work here "illegally" pay there taxes too!! I've seen there pay stubs and like you and I have also deductions from State, Federal, SUI/SDI, MEDICARE, Social Security. Be at least a little educated before making a statement generalizing on everyone!

3
Michael Singh

How can you say that they never pay into the system.  They shop here, work here and just like you pay into the economy they do also.  Yes like Americans who abuse the system there are those who take it for granted, but the majority are to here to work and raise there families.  The shop at the stores and are happy to spend their money in this economy.  Arizona is a right to work state.  If you want to increase your wages tell the state to raise the minimum wage.

Your obviously suffering from republicanbiggoterism brought from Europe to the Americas and been fuel by Fox and its derange entertainers.

Get over yourself.  If you were truly American you would be concerned about the safety of ALL Americans and what is happening here, not just the fact that some that share your ethnicity might be asked for proof of citizenship.  Since your direct ancestors have lived here for hundreds of years I'm sure you have a drivers license.  So when and if you are pulled over for speeding or driving poorly you will have no issues since an officer will not have to ask you for proof.  Your outrage is laughable.

Kudos on this reply.

ok...the safety of all americans....how are these immigrants affecting us? are they attacking us? murdering us?

You are only stopped if you break the law.  Hey lady.. if I run a stop light ... I get stopped and have to produce my driver's license and proof of insurance.   Let's make everyone prove they have the right to be here !

2
Common Sense

False ! The bill requires you only produce 1 of 3 items to establish your identity, citizenship or legal residency status upon a lawful stop of a officer of a citizen.

1. A VALID ARIZONA DRIVER LICENSE.
2. A VALID ARIZONA NONOPERATING IDENTIFICATION LICENSE.
3. A VALID TRIBAL ENROLLMENT CARD OR OTHER FORM OF TRIBAL IDENTIFICATION.

You are just echoing the hysterical nature of the pro-illegal movement who cannot defeat this law which is basically mirroring US Federal immigration laws.

I understand that everyone is feeling the choice that Arizona has made. But I think beyond insulting each other why not ask yourselfs: Today it is this law that will discriminate against all illegal immigrants most especially Hispanics. But what happens tomorrow when they decide that White American's should be shoved to the back of the woods because they don't fit a politician's idea of what an american should be? I understand for those that are racist that they say good ridance to hispanic. Fine, your choice to think that way. But what happens when they label you: white trash? unworthy of help and economic oportunities? what then? when you empower some body to violate the laws that this government fought to build you ultimate hurt yourselves.  Can you imagine? going back 1000 steps, racial and social prejudice. For those of us that are American Citizens, it should become a worry: not only illegal to do this kind of atrocity, but we are becoming a Hitler like society.  Evil starts slow and slowly grows, an even those White groups could potentially feel the pain.  Hope you are never shown that kind of bigotry.

I have not issues with that, but let's get this straight. You have an AZ Drivers License, guess what. You don't have to prove anything at that point. That is your legal status, same as all of us. I am also an AZ resident and if I wanted to play the race card, I have much greater ability to do so. Trust me on that one. It is not profiling. Simply put, you happen to be of the same ethnicity as the greatest majority (well, almost entirety) of the immigration into AZ. Too bad, you have documents, what are you all scared of. I get an ID check everytime I drive in Mesa, AZ and I'm white. So, this is not profiling, it is normal procedure, just now you must show ID or go to jail.

I am an american citizen.  I am in favor of this SB 1070.  If I am required to have a passport here in the United States, I feel that everyone else should have some type of legal documents to reside in the United States.  It is only fair.

Cindy. I decided to reply to your post because even if you are in favor of this bill, you have communicated in an educated manor. I am an american citizen. My skin is fair, pale for some, my hair is blond with darker sun strikes, and my eyes are green. Unlike me, my son skin is tan, his hair is dark brown, and his eyes are brown. He was born in the States, his mom (me) is American, but his dad is Hispanic. I feel specifically offended with this bill because it may affect my son JUST because his profile. That is were I disagree with this bill. You see, our government has let immigrants into this country, given them jobs, and exploited many of them. I think that inllegal immigration is a matter that needs to be resolved, I just do not agree with how they are doing it in Arizona.

AJ "just my 2 cents"

I agree as well, I am 100% American I love my country! I have many hispanic friends that are absolutely great people that do not destroy this country but HELP this country grow. I am so sad that because of the illegal immigrants coming into this country illegally THEY will suffer the same Profiling because of their skin color and we all know it's profiling. They are coaches in our communities some are Police Officers and even a few of their kids have joined the Military but because of this law they will be profiled. I SUPPORT REFORM BUT NOT IN THIS WAY.

Fair? It's easy to talk about fair when you are not at the shit end of the stick, isn't it? OK, look, I am an American. I AM AN AMERICAN LATINA. I love being free and able to pursue happiness. Being picked out and questioned about whether I belong here or not because of the color of my skin is not exatly what I call being free and does not feel much like happiness.....and thats whats UNFAIR. Why should a a blue eyed, blonde haired person enjoy more freedom than I? If this thing does not affect you on as personal a level as a someone who it will effect first hand... how can you speak about what is wrong and what is right? Chicanos, Latinos, or Mexican Americans...whatever you want to call us, are a very proud people. This proudness that we have an absolute right to as AMERICANS feels threatend. We deserve the same dignity and respect that any American would.  Why should all be placed in a single category because of the way we look? I will be immediately able to produce identification if it is required that I do so because following the law is what's right and good. Shouldn't I only be in put in a category as an productive member of our society based on that statemnt alone?  When you get right down to it, when this law goes into effect...I will lose some of my rights as the very American this law is trying to "protect". There has to be another way to handle this.

No one is required to have a passport in the United States. The legislation is racist and unconstitutional.Immigration laws in the United States are unfair and only serve to further stratify US society based on economic means.US Naturalization costs $900+Citizenship exam has to be given in English, unless 55 or older and have had green card for 15 years or more.  The USA has no official language.

Notice that the only people complaining about a downtown in business are Hispanics who are most likely Mexicans. Why is this? It's probably because most of their customers are other Hispanics/Mexicans who are here in violation of US immigration laws. So it seems to me that the law is having its intended effect. There is probably a very good chance that most of the business owners that are complaining cheat on their taxes, especially their state sales tax or gross receipts tax. When I was in business I noticed that Hispanics/Mexicans engage in tax evasion on a regular basis. I'm an American of Mexican descent. I've lived in Mexico and I read, write & speak fluent Spanish. I think SB 1070 is exactly what needed to be done. For years I have watched as Mexicans violate US immigration laws along with laws governing identity, driving laws, you name it. I have watched Mexicans living in violation of US immigration laws take advantage of free education, free medical care and a host of other social services for which I cannot qualify. Yet I have to pay taxes and most of the ones I know don't pay them. That just seems unfair to me. SB 1070 is not about racial profiling. It is about enforcing the rule of law. Our laws either mean something or they don't. Either our immigration laws mean something or they don't. The people who are against SB 1070 betray their ignorance when they call it a "racist" law. They demonstrate that they haven't even bothered to read the law. They don't even realize that all it does is echo federal immigration law. SB 1070 was modeled after it

It's a proven fact that white people never, EVER participate in tax evasion.  Ever.  ^_^
