Arizona, the Skin Thing and Immigration

At times we as a society are a contradiction; we proudly profess to the world that we are the melting pot and the epicenter of social justice, a country born of immigrants and emblematic of what every nation should strive to be. "We are a beacon of tolerance, the epitamy of togetherness and the bearer of moral integrity" we utter to the world but yet our actions and inactions do nothing more than expose our flaws, project our prejudices and uncover our darkest & unforgiveable transgressions against our fellow man.
Arizona, much like Obama's blackness and Adam Lambert's gay kiss simply exposed points of prejudice; hidden feelings that were once only whispers on dinning room tables but are now fully revealed sentiments that inspire the ignorant to cling to ideals that parallel this nations's darker past; one that takes us back to the days of smallpox blankets, slave ships, Japanese internment camps and Jim Crow laws.

The immigration issue, much like health care reform is not simply an argument hinging on constitutionality and statistics but rather, a matter that should tug at our conscience and our pursuit for the greater good; one that should implore us to speak out against social injustice, the indignity of discrimination and the hypocrisy of a society that at times becomes accustomed to projecting its fears on the Brown, the Black, the Gay, the Red, the Female, the Muslim and whomever fits the profile of a political, economic and social pariah.
