New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken up the case of illegal arrest of Head of Zee News Sudhir Chaudhary and head of Zee Business Samir Ahluwalia on 27 November night in an alleged extortion case filed by Congress member of Parliament Naveen Jindal
Acting on a complaint filed by Odisha based Organisation India Media Centre (IMC) the NHRC has a registered a case on the matter assigning case number 7802/30/0/2012.
On behalf of IMC, rights activist Akhand filed a petition before NHRC. He alleged that the way police had made this arrest and behaved with them is very concerning. The detentions were deliberately made before a holiday so that regular bail could be denied. Police arrested them in night such as they are dreaded criminals. Again there is no such strong evidence against the journalists. “As the journalists have been regularly reporting about linking of the Jindal’s company to improprieties in the allocation of coal blocks. the owner of the Jindal company, Mr Naveen Jindal intentionally trap the journalists and made them arrest putting pressure on police”, said Akhand.
Petitioner prayed for a factual and inquiry report from Police Commissioner, Delhi and Central Home Secretary on the matter and order to take action against guilty police officials.
