Arrests in Calgary as protests greet George Bush

Former US President George W Bush is in Calgary today to give a speech to an invitation only audience of around 1500 guests, each paying $400 to attend the event at the Telus Convention Centre.

Amid tight security, around 300 protesters held banners with slogans including "Bush go home" and "Bush is a war criminal".

Those who had paid to attend the event were forced to stand outside in freezing temperatures as each guest was individually searched and asked to part with cameras, cellphones and recording devices. To add to their discomfort, attendees were shouted out by protesters who chanted "shame on you" at those in line.

The atmosphere was tense and a number of protesters were warned to step back by City of Calgary Police. Several people were detained and one man was arrested after allegedly throwing a shoe at the invited guests.

Former hockey star turned TV anchor Kelly Hrudey was in the line up along with many members of Calgary's business community.

Bush also attended a Calgary Italian restaurant and the clients there reported that he was relaxed and down to earth.  Those attending his speech commented that he spoke without a teleprompter and without visible notes.  He discussed his 8 years in office, the war in Iraq and did not criticize President Obama.  In fact he offered his assistance to President Obama if he so desired.
